Audible has a new first-in-series sale, members only, through Monday, February 27, at 11:59 PM PT. Prices start at $4.95.
Audible doesn't mention it, but it looks like series starters not explicitly included in the sales listings are also marked down, to half of list price. |

History of the Berlin Wall--Get Audible Audiobook for $27 or the WS Deal for Just $6.
The Whispersync deal for the ebook below is a must-post. Why? The ebook has very good ratings; it's long (think: great bang for the buck), making for a nearly 19 hour audio; and with a huge markdown on it right now the Whispersync sync deal is a super price, especially compared to the audio alone at Audible. And with the Whispersync deal you get the ebook "free"!
The ebook is a reprint edition, reprinted from an edition of 25 years ago, I think. I don't know what differences, if any, there are between the two. Title: The Berlin Wall: August 13, 1961 - November 9, 1989. Genre: Non-Fiction (History/Politics/Germany). Author(s): Frederick Taylor. Price: $5.98 ($1.99 ebook (marked down) + $3.99 Whispersync audio). Regular Price of Audio, by Itself, at Audible: $26.98 (1 credit). Ebook Rating/Number of Reviews: 4.3 stars/57 reviews (Amazon). Audio Rating/Number of Ratings: 4.20/73 ratings. Pages/Audio Length: 514/18 hours and 57 minutes. Narrator(s): Daniel Philpott. Audible URL: http://www.audible.com/pd/History/Th...ok/B0065OBNOM/. Amazon URL (you can get the whole Whispersync deal here): https://www.amazon.com/Berlin-Wall-A.../dp/B000RH0E2U. Comments: Book Description (Amazon): On the morning of August 13, 1961, the residents of East Berlin found themselves cut off from family, friends and jobs in the West by a tangle of barbed wire that ruthlessly cut a city of four million in two. Within days the barbed-wire entanglement would undergo an extraordinary metamorphosis: it became an imposing 103-mile-long wall guarded by three hundred watchtowers. A physical manifestation of the struggle between Soviet Communism and American capitalism—totalitarianism and freedom—that would stand for nearly thirty years, the Berlin Wall was the high-risk fault line between East and West on which rested the fate of all humanity. Many brave people risked their lives to overcome this lethal barrier, and some paid the ultimate price. In this captivating work, sure to be the definitive history on the subject, Frederick Taylor weaves together official history, archival materials and personal accounts to tell the complete story of the Wall's rise and fall, from the postwar political tensions that created a divided Berlin to the internal and external pressures that led to the Wall's demise. In addition, he explores the geopolitical ramifications as well as the impact the wall had on ordinary lives that is still felt today. For the first time the entire world faced the threat of imminent nuclear apocalypse, a fear that would be eased only when the very people the Wall had been built to imprison breached it on the historic night of November 9, 1989. Gripping and authoritative, The Berlin Wall is the first comprehensive account of a divided city and its people in a time when the world seemed to stand permanently on the edge of destruction. I don't usually post streaming audio, but since I've been encouraged to do so, here goes. BBC currently has "The Underground Railroad" by Colson Whitehead available for streaming here. It should be available for the next 28 days.

![]() Have any of ya'll had any experience using a software program (there are several out there, some of which I think are freeware or shareware) that supposedly record the sounds that come out of a computer? So, for example, if you have a free streaming audio that's not available as a free download, you can still save it on your computer. And is there anyone knowledgeable about the legality of using these programs or downloading items that a website doesn't want you to be able to download, but only to stream? I've wondered about both of those questions for quite some time, but never seen an answer to them (I know that there's bound to be a better thread for this question on MobileRead than this one, but I like you guys better ![]() |
