Today's eMusic free download passes muster.

That is not to say that I enjoyed the song--I didn't. It's just not my kind of thang. But I do not see my "job" as being one of a censor, and just posting free or ultra-cheap songs of genres that I like, but as a person posting quality, well-done music of whatever genre. This song is of great quality and well-done, IMHO, and someone who likes "alternative/punk" (it seems more alternative than punk, and probably "electronic" should be thrown in the description somewhere, too) music probably will like it, or even love it. So here it is.

Actually, Koland's is a little better. And I should have gone into a little detail about how to download the track using the link that I provided. You would need to click on the new-style menu (the one with the vertical dots, instead of the short lines. What was wrong with the old one??? But I digress) to the right of the name of the song.

If you like the genre/style of today's eMusic free download, I recommend it to you. The song is a good one (good music transcends all boundaries--it is found in rock, in country, in electronic, in *gulp* rap/hip-hop). To my non-professional (some would say "unprofessional") ears, I think that the band could be going places.

Genuine thanks for both items.

So, if I don't first download the eMusic piece, I will get a re-direct like you did, but if I do first download, I won't? Well, I always want to listen to the freebie first, so I'll have to go to the actual product/item page and give that URL on my posts. And, like you said it is always better to go to the actual product/item page, instead of a player that displays it as part of the content.

The digital version could be available any number of places, though. There seem to be a lot of websites where new artists can upload their music, and people can buy it, or maybe even get it free. Maybe one of these days I can collect the URL's of these websites together and post them all. I don't know how many MobileReaders would be interested in them, though. After all, this is primarily a website for people who are interested in ebooks, not digital music.

If you like alternative/punk music, I don't why you wouldn't like today's eMusic freebie. In fact, it sounds like a rock song to me, and if you like that genre of music, I think that you would like it, too. Anyway, here are the basics:

Again, eMusic seems to have stepped up the quality of the songs that they select for the daily free downloads. Which prompts the question, "Why haven't they been bringing us this quality all along?"

I deliberately checked just a few minutes ago, which was just a few minutes past midnight EST, and the song had changed over from yesterday's. Just an hour ago or so, yesterday's song was still up. I'll test it some more, before I say definitively, but I wouldn't be surprised if they change the songs consistently at midnight EST or thereabouts. Anyway, I'm "always" awake at midnight, and if eMusic continues to provide good tunes (and they don't have the glitches that plagued them months ago), I'll keep posting the worthy ones, and should be able to post them consistently around this time every night. Now YourClassical's, which I've narrowed down to between a 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. (or maybe it's a 1 a.m. to 2 a.m.) changeover time, well sometimes I might have to wait until up in the day to post it . . . . Not to worry, they're archived for several days, anyway.

I'm listening, at this moment, to Jean Sibelius' Symphony No. 2: IV. Finale. This is a piece that you can receive free today, courtesy of YourClassical.

This is one of the longer freebies that we've received lately, being 13 minutes, 30 seconds long. As with almost all of the freebies that we get from YourClassical, this one, too, is supplied by Naxos. It comes from a 2-CD set of theirs called The Very Best of Sibelius. Although the free piece comes from a CD set, please be aware that the piece that we get free is reduced to the MP3 format.

Compilations are subject to having multiple performers, conductors, and others contributing to the work. This 2-CD set has multiple performers, conductors and others contributing. This free piece, at least, is performed by the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direction of Adrian Leaper as conductor. Get full information about the album from here.

You can download the free MP3 piece, stream it, or do both from this webpage. You don't need an account of any kind to do these things!

The piece just finished playing. Sibelius is one of the younger (late 19th - early 20th century) of the great masters. His music sounds like some of the great older ones. Expect liveliness and intensity from this orchestral piece. It is enjoyable.

What is IMSLP?

IMSLP stands for International Music Score Library Project and started on February 16, 2006. It is a project for the creation of a virtual library of public domain music scores based on the wiki principle; it is also more than that. Users can exchange musical ideas through the site, submit their own compositions, or listen to other people's composition; this makes IMSLP an ever-growing musical community of music lovers for music lovers.

Is IMSLP legal?

Yes. As the IMSLP servers are physically hosted in Canada, IMSLP has to follow Canadian copyright law. There is also a legally unaffiliated US-located server that can only be contributed to by admins and offers out-of-copyright files in the US only. All scores submitted to IMSLP either belong to the public domain, or permission has been granted by the copyright holder to host them here. The copyright status of every file is marked, and it is clearly indicated if it is not legal to download a file in the EU.

Note that files under copyright in both the US and the EU are blocked from access because the legal entity that owns IMSLP is located in the US. Files under copyright in the US but public domain in Canada and the EU are legally available through the unaffiliated EU server.

At first blush, it looks like a treasure trove. It appears that no one is vetting any of the songs to feature the better ones for you (as it seems that Classic-music.com, Alexander Street, Naxos, YourClassical, and others do), so the site is better for those who know what they're looking for. Personally, I'm not at that stage, yet.

The music is provided under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 License (see https://creativecommons.org/licenses/ to learn what this entails, and how it differs from other creative commons licenses. However, when I first started perusing the site, specifically when I clicked to listen to one for the first time, I got a pop-up box which basically said that the songs may not be in the public domain in your country, check with your lawyer, etc. I tried to highlight that, so that I could paste it in this message, but cut-and-paste wouldn't work for it. I was in the process of doing a screen shot of the box by itself, but the box disappeared, and I haven't been able to get it to come up again. Maybe that was mainly for CYA purposes anyway.

I hope that there are going to be some pieces with higher-quality sound than MP3 provides, for the benefit of you hardcore audiophiles, but all that I saw in my limited investigation were MP3's. I tried to find a way to filter the MP3's out and see what was left, but I couldn't find a way, in the limited time that I spent.
