Tattncat, you say "both" of Dan Brown's books and, on the off-chance this is not a typo (or a misunderstanding on my part), and because you mentioned that you loved them, I'd point out that he has released four novels:

Digital Fortress
Angels & Demons
Deception Point
The Da Vinci Code

I've only read the last, so I couldn't say how the others compare, though my brother liked Angels & Demons more that The Da Vinci Code.

Cheers,
Marc

If you read more than two then you'll want to hurt yourself. The plots, the characters, everything is the same. If you stick to Angels and Demons and the DaVinci code you are safe (relatively speaking).

I just finished "the power of the dog" by Don Winslow. Highly recommended. It's like Tarantino writing a book, and his style is unique. I am told his other books are equally good, so I am starting "the winter of Frankie Machine".

Really? I've read Digital Fortress and Angles & Demons. I didn't think they were similar really. Sure, they were similar concept as most books like this follow the same basic formula.

Just finished Tigana by Guy Gavriel Kay.

Well, it is not bad, but not great either. 6/10.

The bad:
The most important plot elements feel contrived, many times important plot elements are not revealed and leave you hanging there. Part of the plot does not fit with the others. Overall, this book is over-hyped and overrated.

The good:
I liked the writing, the world, and the fact that is a "realistic" novel - the heroes do not feel invulnerable and it is hard to guess the plot.

Oh I didn't read Digital Fortress. Deception Point was very similar though. Handsom, intelligent man in his forties, beautiful independent girl with father figure issues, father figure who is a turncoat, turncoat's pawn, etc.

The plot wasn't bad, but the characters were just too similar to the ones in the other books it was a turnoff for me.

I like his early books, but he's become a much better writer since then.

I've finished "White Night" (the Dresden files#9) by Jim Butcher. I'm a few hundred pages into "Refuge" and WOW - most excellent read.

DANG!!! I need to be faster in reading the samples I download (one great feature of the Kindle!). I just read Libby's sample last night, and out of 5 or 6 samples I went through, *THIS* one I want to keep reading. But now I have to wait till ... sometime much later!!! Argghh!!! I don't wanna wait!!

Wonder if her actual thesis is available anywhere ..... (book originally started as a thesis).

why not send her a PM? You could offer to proof-read. A win-win situation.
