Finished Dark Transmissions: A Tale of the Jinxed Thirteenth by Davila LeBlanc, a Harper Voyage freebie.

Fun, quick read. Not much to distinguish it from other space operas. Perhaps, more banter than I like in a sci-fi book. The writing is competent. The books asks the question, are computers alive?

Next tbd.

An odd book that could have been brilliant, but wasn't. Rather too many inconsistent plot points, and the usual failing when trying to write about a much more intelligent character than the author. I won't be getting the other volumes in this series.

I have a feeling I might have read this back in 2008. There are one or two scenes in the book that I think I recognise, but it clearly didn't make much of an impression.

Next up: Analog SFF, Mar/Apr 2017 edited by Trevor Quachri

It seems that Analog has also joined Asimov's in now being a bimonthly magazine, so each issue is bigger.

Finished The Petrified Flesh. Very enjoyable; I may seek out the other two books.

Meanwhile, I am reading Periodic Tales: A Cultural History of the Elements, From Arsenic to Zinc by Hugh Aldersey-Williams.

Currently reading The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency, by Alexander McCall Smith. This is a re-read for the Book Club, since I read this originally about 6 months after it first came out when I started to hear the buzz about it from friends. As with the first time around, I'll wait until the end to pass judgement.

Having read this for the book club, I would not be doing a re-read. It wasn't all that good.

Finished Tau Zero by Issac Asimov. It way all the way good despite a little problem that it was a dead tree book, and I could feel the eyestrains considerably.

Next up, a piece of humor, Emails From an Asshole: Real People Being Stupid by John Lindsay.

I much prefer Smith's serialized 44 Scotland Street novels. Knowing that the were written for a newspaper serialization forgives what otherwise feels like a million false endings.

I picked this up at the airport about 9 years ago. It was good enough to read a couple of the sequels and some of the 44 Scotland Street books.

He was inspired by Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City which were originally serialized in the San Francisco Chronicle.

Now those, I didn't stick with. OTOH, his Isabel Dalhousie books quite charmed me and continue to. I've got one on my TBR right now that I've been waiting my turn for at the library.

Midnight Riot was a three-star read for me. While I enjoyed the Harry Potter series, this one with modern magic was just okay for me. I suspect some of it has to be with being an American and not getting some of the acronyms and cultural references.

I moved on to Quicksilver, which is book on in the Baroque Cycle.

Probably true. Even though I'm a North American, I watch enough British TV, and have spent several months in London over the years, that I was easily able to handle most of them. I'm sure I missed some - that's the nature of the beast. These books were thoroughly 5 stars for me.
