I found a way to get into koreader after exiting nickel: after exiting nickel, select reboot on the ksm home, then select start koreader. This is certainly not convenient, but it works.

Thank you pj123! this is the only way for devices with the rotation problem, until we find a fix. I think you can make it a little bit more convenient.
  • copy an image file with the name reboot.png into kbmenupngs
  • start nickel and treat reboot.png as mentioned in the first post of this threat, First time installation, Step 1, Point 4.
  • restart the device; from now on you can reboot directly from within nickel by selecting reboot.png.

I updated the patch for Aura One and Aura Edition 2. It includes now a better handling in cases KOReader crashes. The modifications to do by the user that I described in emergency power off if KOReader exits spontaneously are not any longer required. Thank you Franzie for reminding me that koreader.sh returns the exit code of the KOReader application.

I would recommend to install this patch on all devices that run any of the more recent firmwares. This patch introduces some improvements, and without this patch you will not be able to connect to a wifi network in KSM on any device. It will also not be possible to run Koreader in the same session, once you run nickel.
With the most recent FW update (4.2.8432), there arose however a problem. On some devices (including H2O), if you install this patch, there will be a screen rotation when you exit nickel back into KSM (which makes it difficult or even impossible for you to handle KSM). So until this is fixed, you would have to restart the reader instead of returning directly to KSM. At least, this is the situation as I understand it at this point (I do not have a H2O, or one of the other models that might be affected by the screen rotation). Devices that are not affected by the screen rotation are, according to my information, Touch (and therefore I guess also Mini), Glo, Glo HD, Aura One (and therefore I guess also Aura Edition 2).

I updated the "Add tiles of chess and other beta features to the nickle home screen" post. There, you can find now the version for KSM 008. Be aware that with the current FW, chess is still not available.

What is the recommended way to backup an existing KSM8 installation? (so that all the settings can easily copied to the new installation)

Thanks.

I have jus updated my Kobo Aura H20 with latest firmware, and also added the patch: KSM08_ext_aura_one_04b.zip, as recommended. I see the screen issue(screen upside down when exiting nickel) that is mentioned. Will there be a fix for this?

Thanks,
John Feole

It depends on what changes you did and want to preserve.

Most likely you did some changes by using "configure." Backing up these changes is the only part that needs some effort, since the file is on the system partition (/adds/kbmenu/ksm_ini). Here is how to do it
Spoiler:
  • select: tools > explore > explore kbmenu.msh
  • toggle to "cp to sysmirror" (by pressing repeatedly "open/info/delete/cp to sysmirro", until you see in the info box: "current mode: cp to sysmirror")
  • scoll down by using the arrow-buttons at the bottom, until you see the entry "ksm ini"
  • press "ksm ini" (by this you copy this file to .adds\kbmenu_user\sysmirror)
  • press "return home" to go back to the ksm home menu
  • now the file is ready to be copied from .adds\kbmenu_user\sysmirror to your pc

On the user partition there are some folders that you might have to back up.
Spoiler:
If you added yourself new configuration options: .adds\kbmenu_user\confoptions
If you added fonts: .adds\kbmenu_user\fonts
If you used the KSM back up command, for instance to back up the database used by nickel: .adds\kbmenu_user\backup
If you added documents to the mynotes folder: .adds\kbmenu_user\mynotes
If you added your own scripts: .adds\kbmenu_user\scripts
If you changed the power off picture: .adds\kbmenu_user\txt

Spoiler:

eth0.

I think this is a problem of Koreader. Until the Koreader developers have addressed this problem, you might try to enable wifi from within KSM before you start Koreader. If wifi is also not working in KSM and you did not install this patch, do it please now.

Question, not directly related to KSM08..

If i want to backup my kobo aura 1 for example,
can i simply copy its whole filesystem to a directory on my laptop?

Is this sufficient, or is there a recommended utility, or method for backing them up?
(have a KA1 and Kobo Aura H20 for the wife)..

Thanks,
John Feole

That will do it. It will preserve your books, your kobo database(s), the adobe certificate stuff, the configuration file used by nickel, and so on. Hacks that live (partially) at the system partition, will not be preserved by that.

Could somebody with a H2O with FW 4.2.8432 (fully installed; that means: not only the KoboRoot.tgz) please run this test script?

Installation:
  • extract KoboRoot.tgz from the uploaded archive
  • copy the extracted KoboRoot.tgz into .kobo of your device
  • safely eject and disconnect your device
  • select (in KSM home) "handle update" > "install update" (do not select "install partial update")
  • wait until the device has rebooted

Running the test script:
  • select: "user scripts" > "start nickel rot test01.sh"
  • after nickel has loaded, exit nickel back to KSM
  • you will be asked to select the (only) option "OK"
    • if the screen orientation is correct, please select "OK" before less than 10 secs
    • if the screen is rotated, do not select anything (the device will be restarted after 10 secs)

Please report the result in this thread. If there is still a rotation problem, I will have to prepare a more elaborated test.
