And no they are not available in a store.
Thanks for clarifying things.

I don't care if it is a known den or not, I'm not going to stick my hand in a hole with a live rattlesnake in it. Same thing about this "noodling" practice, that they do out your way--people sticking their hands in the banks of rivers and lakes and things in holes underneath the surface of the water, and seeing what they can pull out (I think that they're mainly after catfish).

I haven't seen any noodlers around here, but yes they are after catfish. I figure noodling got started with the "here hold my beer" bunch. Or in other words: hey bubba, bet I can grab that catfish with my hand.

And then we wonder why people think we don't have brains out here.

I think, in most cases, at least, that they can't see what's in the hole (unless the hole is too shallow for the entire length of the catfish, so some of the fish is sticking out) and the water is very clear (which hasn't seemed to be the case in the bodies of water in the few instances that I've watched the noodlers work, on television). You may not have people in Texas who do it much, but I think that there are quite a few of these . . . uh . . . hobbyists in Oklahoma.

You may not go to the Audiobooks thread much, but there's a discussion about olive oils right now there. You might wish to weigh in with your knowledge, experience, etc., and it would probably be appreciated. But you may not even cook with olive oil . . . .

I said the first time and bubba probably saw the fish swim that way.
Now I wonder how many catfish went home and said "honey, you should have seen the big thing I caught but it got away."

They used to have large snake roundups in Georgia too. Some were near me and the main focus was collecting the venom to use for medical purposes. Also noodling used to be quite prevalent in Georgia only the people I knew called it tickling. My father used to do it when he was a teenager, until the day he thought he was tickling a bass and threw a large water Moccasin up on the bank. That was the last time he did it.

Is your father still alive to talk about it or did the water moccasin get him?
That sentence could be read either way.

He did not get bitten by the snake. I would not be around if he died as a teenager.
He did die December 27, 2002 from Lung Cancer, most likely caused by exposure to Agent Orange.

No wonder the price of anti-venom is so high.

There is a boy near here who was playing with some friends in the woods and, while running, he passed by a rattlesnake, which popped him. The anti-venom, alone, to save the boy, was around $140,000. However, perhaps because of his age, and therefore size, it took something like 50 vials to save him.

If you don't mind doing the job, you could probably make a lot of $$$$$ capturing rattlesnakes. But, it looks like there would be a way to raise them on a rattlesnake farm kind of thing, and minimize risk to the handlers. It would also drive down the cost of the anti-venom.

I saw on the news a year or two ago that there is a big operation in a little town close to here, where I suppose that all that they do is keep snakes of many, many different varieties and sell the venom from each one of them to anti-venom manufacturers. Interesting little town. It's also got a business that comes in after violent crimes (think: lots of blood and guts) and cleans it all up. I never knew how that got taken care of until then.
