Just got an email saying that the launch discount will be over soon. How can be sold out with still 8 months left until the release date?

Where is sony's generation 2 of digital paper?

They were only testing people's interest. They did not make any devices yet. This is only the end of their "LAUNCH OFFER".
We will see if this is also the end the whole project perhaps in the summer?

Sony is waiting for general availability of new resolution E Ink displays and new i.MX7 chip. There is no point releasing new DPT with old hardware.

A company in China released a new 9.7'' e-reader called Jing Page X which has a very similar specification to the reMarkable and you can already buy it. So this proves that such a e-reader can be created.

How do you know about Sony? Because if we are talking about the same company, if Sony would like to use IMX7 , they would incorporate into their devices themselves, not wait for anyone. IMX7 is easily available from 2016, so I don't understand what you are refering to. I didn't hear any gossips about new e-ink screen coming neither..

Page X has 9.7inch 1200x825 resolution (150dpi).
10.3inch display with 1872x1404 resolution (226dpi) is a different ball game.

i.MX7 is available BUT updated E Ink's displays are not available yet.
Current 13.3inch is 1600x1200 resolution (150dpi).
New 13.3inch display will have 2200x1650 resolution (206dpi).
As E Ink is the only epaper producer with a sheer monopoly they have plenty of time.

Unfortunately the new generation of EPD panels are available ONLY in small quantities:

They are not able to make large qualities. And it will remain expensive.

From an ebook perspective, they're only supporting PDF and ePub, and only DRM-free PDF and ePub at that.

It's definitely aimed at people producing their own documents, IMO.

I'm interested in their use of a non-glass substrate in the display. But it's definitely not something I'll be ordering until it ships. Note that your card gets charged when you order, not when the product ships.
