I remember that there was a way to automatically start KOReader from KSM, but can not find it anymore.

Reason i'm asking is that sometimes it seems that KOReader exits to KSM, and because KSM has no sleep mode, i find my e-reader with an empty battery.

What's the reason by the way, that there is no sleep mode in KSM, while KOReader does have one?

The two are different software, so can't compare them.

I know they're different software, but I wonder why it's not in there. it doesn't seem to be a limitation by nickel, and since KOReader is (free?) open source software, the function could (possible) be adapted to work with KSM?

Hi! After a FW update yesterday on my Kobo H20, I can no longer get into KoReader. "start koreader" always takes me to "Info: Wifi is enabled!". The only thing I could do is to close it, then the screen goes back to the KSM home. What should I do? Thank you so much!

Also, 'start nickel" pops up the "handle your update" message, should I choose to "accept the update" or "delete the update"?

I even reflashed "kbmenupngs" and "KoboRoot.tgz", still no avail.

Nickel is also another software, made by Kobo, it does not limit the other two. When KSM or KOReader is running, nickel is not.
The only (and most simplified) reason is that tshering didn't implement this feature in KSM.

I am not sure whether the two problems are related to each other. Let us start with one first. You have not yet installed the FW update. It is on your device but waits for being installed. From the KSM main menu:
select "handle update" (you will be shown the battery level, if the battery level is low, return to the main menu and charge your device; then come back here)
select "handle partial update" (this will install the FW update; be patient this will need some time; after the device has rebooted, you should be able to start nickel).

EDIT: After re-reading your post, I am not sure what is the real situation on your device. You say you reflashed KoboRoot.tgz. I guess you mean the one of KSM 08. Did you overwrite the one of the FW update? Or did you first successfully install the FW update? Maybe in this situation it is better to choose to remove the update, and see what happens (I expect that nickel starts again). Let us see how to continue after you report what has happened.
EDIT 2: That you copied the png files anew might also create some problems. If the "handle your update" message has disappeared and nickel refuses to start nevertheless, start it via "tools > nickel diverse.msh > start nickel no fmon.sh". If you are in nickel visit the pngs in the library and open then. After you did this , power the device off (with the power button), and then again power on. Then you should be able to start nickel normally.

I removed the sleep function because it was not reliable. Sometimes the device woke up by itself after some minutes, sometimes after some days.
I provided some way to prevent the battery from discharge if koreader fails. It includes manipulating the Koreader files (however you have to do this by yourself).
If you opt to go this way first install the latest version of the Auro One and Auro Edition 2 patch (contrary to the name it is for all devices). Then read this post and follow the points 1.1 and 1.2 (do not point 2 and do not download the archives provided there; this is not necessary any longer.)

Hello tshering! Thanks. Now following your instruction I have no problem to enter "nickel". But I found every time after I get out of the "nickel", I can no longer get into Koreader. "start Koreader" will only give me "Info: Wifi is enabled!". Also, after reboot, if I don't touch anything, after a short while, it will automatically enter the "nickel" model and the screen shows a message that says "something went wrong". Could you help? For koreader to work after nickel, install this patch. It is compatible with all devices.
That nickle starts automatically after 20 seconds or so is normal. What is the something that goes wrong, I do not know. I have to look into the KSM code first.
Edit: Does this look like a message from nickel or KSM? It sounds somehow familiar to me (could have been written by me), but I cannot find it.

Thanks tshering. That patch didn't work. I got fonts upside down. So I reinstalled the original KSM08. I still have the problem of not letting me enter koreader after nickel. Could you tell me how to do a clean reinstallation of KSM08. What I just did was to simply move KoboRoot.tgz to .kobo and reflash, then select "update all". Apparently that still didn't solve the problem.

Update: I did factory resetting, then did a clean reinstall of KSM08 and Koreader . Still the same problem. Apparently this problem is caused by the recently installed new kobo FW.

hahaha, i found that post just yesterday (after posting here) and installed that (including the now removed archive)
I'll redo it with the patch.

Do I understand that you have now installed the KSM08 without the patch for Aura One, and that KSM and nickel work, but Koreader does not. And that after installing the Aura One patch, KSM is rotated when you exit from nickel back to KSM? I put a warning to the patch for Aura One. The Koreader developers will find a solution for the Koreader problem. Anyway I will try to find a solution for the rotation problem. Are you ready to do some tests that do not involve any risk?
Another question did you try to run Koreader directly after powering on (that means without involvement of nickel) with installed patch for Aura One?

I would rather say it is currently not. It seems that after one returns from nickel to KSM, there happens a screen rotation (a problem that we had already at a prior stage, two years ago or so).
At this point, I would discourage first time users from installing KSM on H2O.

Could people with devices other then Touch, Mini, Glo, Glo HD, Aura One report their experiences with KSM 8 and FW 4.2.8432? Please mention also whether you have installed the latest patch for Aura One.

I am especially interested in

• does KOReader work?
• does KSM work after you exit from nickel back into it?

If you experience a rotated screen in KSM, do not panic. Force a power off by pressing and holding the power button for 20 seconds or so (there will be no visible change on the screen). After that you can power on again.

Of course, if someone has a problem on Touch, Mini, Glo, Glo HD, Aura One, I am also interested.
