It's always possible the author could release an e-book herself.

Then why are you on a site dedicated to e-reading?

Not sure if it's been mentioned already, but...the "Harbinger" trilogy by Diane Duane. Basically, a series set in one of TSR's (now Wizards of the Coast) role-playing game universes. I hadn't heard of the game before the books came out, but absolutely loved the books. Just found out recently that the company has the rights to the books and has no real interest in releasing ebook copies, which is sad

Sometimes I'm amazed at the number of copyright holders who play dog in the manger. Let's face it, the odds are they wouldn't make much money on those books, but if you aren't going to do anything with them, revert the rights to the author or put it in PD. Yes, one of my pet bugaboos. Copyright is a bargain between the government and the author.

That is a feature for publishers. Keeping books out of the market makes it easier to sell the ones you want to. The same goes for orphans; the harder it is to republish them, the better. It's all about controlling the market.

In this particular case, it's a work-for-hire. They're tie-in books, set in a world owned by the gaming company. They're never likely to release the copyright on the novels when it's too entwined with other elements of their intellectual property.

That's one attitude that I don't get. Putting the books out as ebooks is also publicity for the gaming company/game universe that the books are set in. I note that the old Bard's Tale tie in books are available and the original game was ported over as a pseudo Easter Egg in the iPad remake of the game. Sometimes the suits let marketing theory get in the way of making money.

I am still waiting for Lisanne Norman's Razor's Edge and Dark Nadir (Sholan Alliance Series) to be released. The earlier books and the later books have been released.

Circle's End, a new release in the series, will be coming out in September.

I hope DAW hurry up and release those others prior to that.

Yay! I just discovered that a Kindle version of The Wind's Twelve Quarters, a collection of stories by Ursula K. Le Guin, is available for pre-order at Amazon (release date: 14 Feb.). Although most of the stories are available in other ebook collections. I really like this compilation. I was planning to create my own version, but I'm happy to forego the hours of scanning and proofing. Now I can donate my old battered paperback.

We got it in the UK about 18 months ago, from SFGateway. I read it last year. What a great book.

You inspired me to go check out the UK Amazon Kindle store, and I found my second favorite collection of Le Guin's stories, The Compass Rose, available. I can only hope it means we'll eventually get that one here in the US as well. You guys also have Cordwainer Smith in your Kindle store. I'm jealous!

How odd. I could have sworn I had the first two in ebook, but apparently not. Well, you know they say that the memory is the second thing to go....
