That is important to know. Installing the OS could cause a brick or the need to factory reset. So I do think that just pointing people to the relevant thread only isn't a good idea. I think it is a good idea to ALSO point them to the relevant thread.
The device will refuse to install the OS part if it is not made for it. You would have to trick the device into installing it.

Unfortunately, it hasn't always been the case. Earlier firmware for the Mark 3 and Mark 4 devices didn't handle this properly. It's why I started my collection of images I don't remember when they cleaned it up, but there was never a real risk with the Mark 5 and Mark 6 firmware.

Except that this is no longer true, 4.2.8110 has been released for nearly all devices I think.

No, 4.2.8110 was only released for the Aura ONE and Aura Edition 2. But, it was reasonably safe to use on the other devices.

4.2.8432 has been released officially (with the beta and fnac affiliates) a few days ago for the Kobo Aura H2O, the Kobo Aura HD, the Kobo Aura Edition 2, and the Kobo Aura ONE.

This may not be the most suitable thread for this, but I just updated H2O to 4.2.8432 and it is glitchy. The screen refresh seems buggy, and when it goes to sleep, 2/3 of the screen shows some rotated image for a moment, 1/3 is clear, and between the two, there is a line. Also, ghosts of this rotated image appear, during sleep, and in the menu also. Navigating in the menu also has this buggy screen refresh, the 2/3 screen image seems to be the actual whole image rotated 90° and stretched to fit that part of the screen.

How did you update your H2O? Did you do so with just KoboRoot.tgz or did you do a full update? If you did just the KoboRoot.tgz, do a full update. If you did a full update, try another full update. If another full update stll doesn't work, do a factory reset and then a full update. I did a full update with my H2O and I'm not seeing any of those issues that you are seeing.

The problem you are having is that the OS changed the graphics from 16bpp to 32bpp and without the new OS, the system software cannot work properly.

Is it really released for H2O officially? I can't find any info of their firmwares in the Kobo website.
Thx.

Kobo don't make any announcements on their website about firmware. There is a blog or something that they have used for some announcements, but I don't think they announce firmware updates there.

Kobo don't officially support manually installing firmware. Hence, they don't publish download links.

The way to know about an update is to sync your device. If there is an update, it will download and install. If there isn't, the sync will proceed as normal.

Yes, there is a new firmware for the H2O. For right now, it's not out for all the affiliates. So you will get it via a sync only if you have the correct affiliate.

But, you can go to the following thread and get the firmware and side load it.

jesus...

this thread right here just became hilariously exemplary
for why i lost the overview about the firmware situation
and felt the need to open it in the first place lol

i think i will not nerd myself through these manual file-
modification-thingys anymore and just sync it once a
week or so to see what happens. who has time to spend
so much effort on an ebook reader?

NO OFFENSE!!! really

thanks anyway for all the answers

kind regards
