My exact sentiments pilot bob. I am new here and have decided to come on because this thing is an absolute abomination as well as a slap in the face of all K1 owners. TTS is blank horrible however folders, or lower priced content!! Darn I am not even excited by this white elephant.

production problems

Yeah if history is any indicator there is going to be a backlog for the k2 and it may take a few months to get one.

I am disappointed that they did not come out with a couple of versions at different price points. Oh well, I can wish!

All they had to do was spend time here.

I guarantee you, In the feedback they got "please eliminate the SD card slot" wasn't one of the choices...............

well im not impressed it looks even bigger than the original kindle, no memory card slot, no backlight, not on sale outside US and im guessing the sony prs 505 is thinner as-well otherwise they wouldn't of compared the kindle 2 to the iphone.

As for amazon not selling outside of the US because it is selling all it can make is total rubbish if there is demand then you satisfy it (as you say amazon are a business so are focused on making money) apple wouldn't just say well our 1 ipod factory is running at max let's just sell those ipods no they would build more factories (well get the OEM manufacture to)

Hello everyone I think this thing blows chunks. The TTS is something that 1% of kindle owners asked for!! And now they tell us we can't replace our own battery or even use an 8 gb card!! wtf!!

As a version 1 owner, it doesn't tempt me that much at all. Some nice things (more memory, better battery life, USB charging, more grey shades), but nothing compelling to me. And some regressions (no SD, battery apparently not user-replaceable).

As noted by others above, Amazon needs to work on firmware (and honestly, text-to-speech was not high on my wish list).

Better library management is especially needed with the larger standard memory. I personally would like to see more font sizes and user-loadable fonts (a big plus for my Cybook over the Kindle).

But if I were looking for my first e-ink device, the K2 would be a nice option.

(Buyers should note that a a cover is no longer supplied with the device, apparently.)

I believe the Sony is thinner. Also, if they were to compare to the Sony then they would be letting the average user know that other reading devices exist.

(average users exclude mobileread members)

No eink screen can have backlighting. It's not possible. The light is unable to shine through.

Once rumors of the Kindle 2 came about, I did guess that the backlog was so Amazon could dump the Kindle 1 in favor of the Kindle 2 whenever that would be.

I don't know if the Kindle 2 is thicker then the 505 or not. Might not be. And if it is, it's probably not by much.

And Amazon did raise the price of the Kindle 2. They did it deceptively. They have the price of the Kindle 2 the same as the Kindle 1, but because you have to now pay $30 more for the case, that's $30 more then it was. THis is deceptive practices and it also means more people will end up with a caseless Kindle and I bet we'll be seeing more broken Kindles because of this. Thank you Amazon for not including the case.

Yeah. I'm going to get one if I can convince the Spousal Unit that I really need it.

Shiny. Whatever.

It is slimmer, it has increased on board memory and larger battery cap. Plus -- SHARPER SCREEN, MEANING EASIER TO READ!

Sorry , just had to shout there, since my only complaint about the mkI has been the somewhat fuzzy screen as compared to other devices I've seen.

edit - Oh, and since I was simulposting with Wolf, I sort of like being able to order the case I want, rahter than the Amazon case, which, on the mkI sucked. I want the neoprene one that zips, thenkyew.

There are probably more broken (version 1) Kindles from those who trusted the horrible mounting system of the supplied case than there are from those using "naked."
