When you're under 40, I consider not being able to speak, read and write English properly to be a huge handicap, especially if you work in a technical profession.
My field is embedded/industrial software engineering. I once had to adjust some stuff in a machine.... and it was programmed in French. Including the use of accents.... FOR i = 1 to 10 DO (* Some French comments *) (French function and variable names in here) END_FOR IMHO, if you write software for stuff that is sold internationally (and has to be maintained by people other than the original manufacturer, in case of custom machinery), you're a *complete idiot* if you *don't* write that stuff in English. But yeah... that's off-topic here. |

I just resumed reading my 300 page book. The reader's almost drained, and the book has clocked 28.5 hours. Obviously, the sleep cover failed again, and this is the original €50 cover. This is just irritating. With regard to reliability, the KA1 is MUCH worse than my old KPW1.
The only problem the KPW1 ever had was that for some books, at some point, it would just cut Time To Read in half for no apparent reason. The only two things actually keeping this reader this long is the large screen and the calibre collections integration. |

Yesterday I updated the KA1 to firmware 8432. Today I've seen the first blue screen since 1996 that was not caused by a faulty/buggy display driver. The computer blue-screened as soon as I tapped the "Connect" button on the KA1 after connecting it to the computer. (FYI, it's the stock firmware with no patches installed.)
A fracking e-reader, which basically is a USB mass storage device, crashed my computer. That's just unbelievable.. I'm getting close to calling the KA1's firmware a piece of junk. Last edited by Katsunami; 02-03-2017 at 02:18 PM. |

I can count my computer crashes in the last 20 years on the fingers of one hand, and all of them were caused by buggy display drivers. Read the thread. The KA1 has USB connectivity problems on Windows 10 since the Anniversary Update last year, where *no other device* has been affected. The number of USB-sticks, external hard drives, phones, and a plethora of other devices I use with this computer is staggering, and none of them ever failed to connect; not before, and not after the Anniversary update. |

I've read exactly 0 people having USB issues with Linux, Apple or any Windows computer before Windows 10 Anniversary Edition, but the problem is caused by the Kobo device... of course! |

The Kobo device is the only device to have problems after the Anniversary Update.
Microsoft changed/fixed something. No devices have problems with that, only the KA1. It means the KA1 is doing something it shouldn't be doing. That, together with all the battery problems, syncing issues, and even the official sleep cover not always shutting down the reader, makes the KA1 a highly unreliable device. I'm seriously thinking (again) to pick up my old Kindle again. Last edited by Katsunami; 02-03-2017 at 03:26 PM. |
