My usual method for choosing a book is to open the book list and page through it until I find something I like. Frequently, something in the list will make me think of another book and I'll search for that. Or I might tap the page number and enter a random number and start from that page in the list. |

The one reason why I don't put more than around 1-15 books on an e-reader is because I'm deathly afraid of losing it. I don't really care about the e-reader; that can be easily replaced. It's just a monetary inconvenience. The thing I don't want to happen is my entire library ending up in the wild somewhere.

With fewer books, I also get more of a sense of progress as the number of books on device fluctuates up and down. With a large library, I despair at the size of my to-read list ![]() Finally, by keeping fewer books on device, it means I plug the reader into USB to load more often and I find I get close to enough charge from that to keep going without having to remember to actually recharge my reader. That said, my preferred number is probably between 20-50 and not as low as 4. |

I find that it's so much easier to look for the next book with Calibre than on my Kobo. And since it only takes me seconds (ok, say a minute) to connect the reader and transfer the book, I could probably get away with having only one book on the reader.
![]() That said, I have a couple of hundreds on it (almost all non-fiction). I tend to read maybe 4-5 books at a time (mostly non-fiction, usually 1 fiction at a time). If I travel and won't have access to my library, I usually add a bunch a books just in case. |

Small anecdote: ages ago, when I was still young, we went on a Interrail tour through Europe. We first went to Kopenhagen, then Berlin, Vienna, Bern and then back home. On the way from Kopenhagen to Berlin, we wanted to book a night train from Berlin to Vienna (the only night train we've taken that entire trip). So, I went to a counter and tried to order a ticket, in my bestest German. After a few sentences, the person opposite me switched to English... I probably had used a bit too much English inbetween my German ![]() (I always had low grades for English, German and French at highschool, I always mixed up the languages ![]() On that same trip, in Kopenhagen, there was an interrail counter (staffed by Danish students, to help interrailers in Kopenhagen) at the train station. We were talking to a helpful person (in English, as my Danish isn't really existing either) when two French guys came along. They started talking in French. The person on the other side made it clear he didn't understand French, only Danish, German and English. Those two French persons didn't understand him and kept on talking to him in French... ![]() Problem is, I can read French (with difficulty), but I can't make myself understood in the language... But Spanish and Italian might as well be Chinese... |
