This issue could only come up in a forum like this that has members from all over the US and beyond. After all, if people refer to "BPL" in their daily lives, they are referring to their own local library and everyone in their city or county (or whatever entity the library is named for) knows it.

On a forum like this, as long as it's clear from the context which library is being discussed, I don't really care if the poster is discussing Boston or Boondocks

Libraries aren't the only institutions with such abbreviations. There are also multiple universities with the same abbreviation, such as ASU or MSU. How would you determine which ASU, MSU, etc. is the only correct one? And do you think you could really get students, school officials, alumni, etc. associated with all the other ASU's or MSU's to stop using those letters?

I agree that that the same abbreviation can mean different things depending on context, or local usage e.g., pc. I may use it to mean politically correct, personal computer or after meals. In the context of Overdrive member libraries, BPL is Boston as in bpl.overdrive.com. --Brooklyn is Brooklyn.overdrive.com.

When I am on an Overdrive thread that is what I would expect.

Maybe a better way to express this to newbies, instead of saying "you are WRONG, BPL can mean only one thing" would be to say to the newbie, "here on Mobileread, the convention is that PL is Boston as in bpl.overdrive.com. --Brooklyn is Brooklyn.overdrive.com"

I think to Jon it will always be BPL = Boston Public Library but everyone else knows the current abbreviation is referring to the previous mention.

I have Automatic hold checkout checked, but it did not check out my latest book. It's worked up until now in the Philadelphia library. This was a book that I had requested for purchase and was automatically added to my holds, so I wonder if that was the problem.

The last time one of my recommendations was purchased, the same thing happened to me. I don't pay close attention to the messages when I recommend a book, though, so it could be I forgot to ask for auto-checkout.

I have never once had Philly buy a book I requested! I eventually assumed they never did. Now that I know they do, I'll start trying again.

Alot of people use this feature to get in line early with best sellers. Like the last Stephanie Plum novel as soon as it was listed on Overdrive I recommend it which put me 12 out of 309 in line.

Try emailing them also. I had a great success rate (at FLP) when I emailed requests (although I haven't done it in quiet a while).

On Tuesday, I had a book waiting for me that I requested. It was released on Tuesday. I have automatic borrowing turned off. When I went to click the borrow link, the Philadelphia Free Library came up with an error. It was also showing that it was available on January 31, 2017. So, I waiting until Wednesday. When I checked the library on Wednesday, the problem was solved.If it wasn't solved, I would have contacted the library. The listing for the book also showed recommended instead of on hold. I have seen that error before and waiting one day fixed it. It's not a common error.
