I think you are right! I found a picture of Janelle and Kevin together and I could fully see the resemblance.

Are the books of Kevin Hearne any good?

I read the first book in the Iron Druid Chronicles, Hounded, and highly dislliked the main character, Atticus, so never read any more of the series. But there are a lot of folks who really like the series . . . different strokes for different folks!

I agree on this one. The theory was interesting, but I thought Atticus was a bit of a "Mary-Sue" character (or whatever they call the male version). Too smart, too smooth, too slick. He solved all the problems, diddled all the women. And yes, my impression was based on one book. I always mean to go back and try at least one more, but never do. Too many other books I actually *want* to read. But I really liked the sound of the story setup/world/concepts, so I was disappointed that I didn't like the first book more.

Hmm, not too promising. I don't really care for such characters. IMHO the best characters have good and bad traits. After all, we all have them.

I didn't dislike Atticus for the "Gary-Sue" thing, actually I didn't view him as such. I disliked him because he didn't care when bad things happened to humans because of his and/or other immortals actions.

I've enjoyed all of Kevin Hearne's books. I don't read much Urban Fantasy or even Fantasy anymore, but I enjoy his. As with any author, the characters developed more in later books.

Did you ever read the Mark del Franco Connor Gray series (started with Unshapely Things)? Or Alexandra Hughes' Mindspace Investigations series (started with Clean)? Both have quite definitely fallen heroes.

Del Franco's series is finished, and it looks (sadly) like it didn't do well enough for the big Publishers. It looks like he's writing epic fantasy for kindle now.

Hughes' series is still open ended, but got stalled when she got pregnant and her writing muse went all otherwise. She recently posted in her newsletter that some experimenting on methods seems to be doing well for her (plus, baby is probably old enough to actually sleep through the bleeping night) and she's back in business. But she's be self-pubbing. This series I think is just different enough to not necessarily grab lots of readers. (Main character is a struggling drug addict - and if you knew my family history, you'd know how unlikely it was for me to want to read this, but she made it work!)

Edit to Add: Hughes has a few short stories (one might be long enough to call a novella) tied to her series. I read them - they were okay, but don't add to the series. If you're not a purist that *has* to read everything, you'd be fine skipping them.

Rereading Blood Rites at the moment and while reading about Lara Raith I got a mental picture of Elexis Sinclaire from the game Sin. I think Lara is prettier, but the outfit would be something that Lara would enjoy...
