				Links not accessible

![]() May be not the right place for my concern? (I didn't find a better one): A mobileread concerning issue. Anyway: Please make sure that links are accessible, especially links from a tutorial, even it's an older one. The links under User Manual Links for Conversion: all refer to 404 Not Found

![]() Is there no way to save such linked sites on a mobileread server? Only in special cases, of course. It seems quite normal that linked sites disappeare. |

The problem would be that the staff wuld have to check every thread and every link to make sure the links are still valid. The best way to handle this is if you find a post that has invalid links, report it so staff can do something about it.

IIRC phpBB software had a link checking plugin/bot/whatever that logged dead links, of course someone had to check the logs to see if they mattered. Be surprised if VBully board didn't have something similar or better - my phpBB memories must be at least a decade old.

Even if we had access to logs of broken links, how would we go about correcting them? We'd have to contact the external sites' maintainers to find out if the original content could still be reached with new/different urls. Or scour their new site ourselves to see if we could figure it out.

Old, stickied, still-heavily-used posts like this one? Sure, we'll update some broken links if someone can provide the new ones. But old posts that have simply fallen by the wayside over time? That's probably not going to happen. Nothing lasts forever. *shrug* Last edited by DiapDealer; 01-27-2017 at 12:52 PM. |

As others have said, links outside of the MobileRead domain may go away, or be changed. This is out of our control. Things that need to stay around for a while are better placed in our wiki, and then make the data local to the wiki. In the case you mentioned you might have noticed that Calibre web site is mention a lot. We have a forum group devoted to Calibre and you might want to go there to find the up to date improved versions of those items. Otherwise you may want to go to archive.org web site that archives older pages from may different sites. The wayback machine may be able to find them.

In the wiki, an old archive status page may include wayback links to key pages, and it some case the links were turned into local pages. However, the forum has a vast set of pages and it is impossible to keep them all live for eternity. The Internet is constantly changing and pages come and go. The wiki has capture several tutorials for creating and converting eBooks. Dale |

Nevertheless, I am a bit confused, because I expected some external websites. The now activated links leads to sites which were already there before, or? Last edited by chaot; 02-01-2017 at 03:00 PM. Reason: change wording |

The calibre manual is now has its own sub-domain instead of being in a sib-directory of the main calibre domain. The links just needed a bit of tweaking.
