Calibre Can't Read Fire Books
I have been a Calibre user for many years, using the ASW format. Recently, I bought an Amazon Fire. I was able to connect it to Calibre, but Calibre was unable to read the data. I could not transfer fire books into my Calibre book collection.
What am I doing wrong? |

Two things. First, the DRM tools (if you have them) do not support kindle books on Fire tablets. So any books with DRM will not be usable.
Second, most books from Amazon delivered to a Fire tablet will be in the new KFX format which neither calibre nor the DRM tools currently support. |

Ah! I didn't know about KFX format. If I know Kovid, he'll want to fix that as soon as possible. In the meantime, I'll try to do some research on KFX. Thanks for the reply.

While adding support for reading KFX format books should be fairly easy to do, currently they are all DRMed so my motivation for doing so is not very high. As far as I know the only way to get hold of non-DRMed KFX files is to convert them from other formats, which makes adding the ability to convert from KFX to calibre fairly pointless. If in the future this changes and DRM-free KFX books become widely available, I will revisit.

To me, it makes no difference if the books are DRMed. I use Calibre to catalog all my ebooks, and plan out my future reading schedule. Without KFX books, I will no longer be able to use Calibre to do this. I hope you will reconsider installing KFX support, so it will allow me to continue using Calibre. KFX seems to be the next step towards the future of the ebook industry. It would be a darn shame for Calibre to be left behind. Please reconsider. |

@Ambermnk: You can add any file type you lie to calibre, including KFX. You just cannot convert it.

That would be fine. The problem is - I tried. Calibre did not recognize the format. Don't know what format the books are in, but they're on my Fire. What do you suggest?

It is potentially possible to implement this. KFX books on the Fire contain the same set of files as on an e-ink Kindle, just with different names and folder arrangement. I have no interest in using or developing such a feature myself. I just wanted to clear up a possible misunderstanding. |

OK, I installed'Kindle for the PC,' and downloaded 3 books into the file. However, I can find no way to get Calibre to import them into its database.
