My wife has a Paperwhite 1st generation, and the font isn't darker than on my Oasis. She has a Kindle 2 as well, and that font is definitely grey.
It appears to be darker on my Kindle Keyboard, but I think it's because the KK font is thicker (i.e. it's a bold style font). Honestly, I think it's the backlight that also helps trick me into thinking the text is lighter. If I turn off the backlight completely and closely inspect the font, it's almost as dark as the black frame around the screen. And Caecilia is a bolder font than Bookerly, so that also makes a difference. So yeah...combine Caecilia and no backlight, and you've got pretty dark text on the Oasis. -HM |

I'm also considering getting an Oasis after many years of using the Kindle Keyboard. Would you consider posting images of the screens side-by-side to show the difference in contrast and darkness of fonts?

Here are some images. The forum guidelines do not allow them to be more than 600x600, so the resolution isn't great.
I think the biggest improvement is the KFX format. Note, especially with Bookerly, how more words get inserted with each subsequent line, but it never feels cramped. Also note how the Oasis light does affect the exposure, so keep that in mind when examining the photos. Here the Oasis is set to Bookerly, light off: Here the Oasis is set to Bookerly, light at 12: Here the Oasis is set to Caecilia, light off: Here the Oasis is set to Caecilia, light at 12: -HM Last edited by Hollow Man; 01-21-2017 at 11:12 AM. |

People shouldn't even hesitate with regards to upgrading their Kindle Keyboard to something more current, whether it be the PW3, Voyage, or the Oasis. I'm very satisfied. -HM |

In the photos, the text looks better on the KK.

It's not. It's because the bold font on the Kindle Keyboard makes it stand out more in a low resolution photo. Looking at the "18" and "57%" in each with the original photos makes it clear that the darkness is the same.

Would mind attaching some of the original photos? It doesn't matter that attached photos are larger than 800x600.

Ok, here's higher resolution. Again: photos aren't everything. These are not the best focused photos, and remember the font on the Kindle Keyboard is bold, which gives it the illusion that it's darker. Note how the "57%" "and "13 mins left in chapter" on the Oasis, when comparing it with the text of the book right above it, appears darker as well (because it's bold).
My wife, who's a graphic designer and a bit of an expert in typography, states that the photos don't do justice to the fact that in person, the Kindle Keyboard text is clearly bold. -HM Last edited by Hollow Man; 01-21-2017 at 12:25 PM. |

For some, the KK will be easier to read from because of the increased weight of the fonts. Also, some will find the Oasis to be too think (needs more weight). The problem is that there is no one way that works for everyone.

One feature Kobo has that would do well on a Kindle is the ability to adjust the weight. I've read of people finding some of the Kindle fonts to be a bit thin.

I always read with bold Caecilia. I don't want a thinner/lighter font. Some people don't mind. I do.
It is possible to compile a kindle format ebook to contain the a bold font. Maybe try that and see how it looks. Somebody here has probably uploaded an ebook with the heavier font included. It would be interesting to see how you feel about the heavier font on the Oasis. I understand the new FW does include a bold font, but apparently Amazon chose an unpopular font to make bold. |
