An enjoyable conclusion. Although the idea that our heroes would be the ones getting to go on the adventure again is more fantastic than anything in the story.

The whole series feels more like Stephen Baxter than Terry Pratchett, but that's probably because I expect that it is. Although some of the ideas are very Prachettian.

Next up: Time and Again by Clifford D. Simak. I'm pretty sure I read this years ago in paper, but it's interesting enough to continue.

Finally finished The Apocalypse Triptych - and I guess at less than a week for over a thousand pages, that's not too shabby. (As I say about my first time reading It, "I finished reading it in six days. On the seventh, I rested.")

There are some innovative apocalypse scenarios in there, and only two authors used zombies. Several asteroid strikes, a few plagues, battling AIs, nuclear warfare, killer mold… overall, it's a pretty good mix. I give the set 4 out of 5, as there were a couple of clunkers (IMO) and it was a hassle jumping between all three books to read each arc in sequence without missing any of the standalone stories.

I should observe that at least three of the authors linked their stories into their existing post-apocalyptic settings, either showing What Came Before or telling side stories. Getting more specific would probably spoil at least one plot twist, so I'll leave it there.

Next up: I think it's finally time to crack Hugh Howey's Wool series. He was a co-editor for the Triptych and contributed a story arc, so I might as well read some more of his work. I've bought plenty, but haven't gotten around to 'em yet.

Alright, I did put aside that book and just finished out the Gap series by Stephen R. Donaldson with This Day All Gods Die: The Gap into Ruin.

I am not sure what I will go with next, perhaps a non-fic about the Norman conquest or the latest C.S. Friedman series...

It started out reasonably well. But it drifts a bit, and the ending is poor. An odd time war with no evidence that the past can actually be changed. An unconvincing and thin reason for the time war. And a completely mysterious something that is very much underplayed.

There are also some enormous plot holes.
Spoiler:
The major one being a search for a person in a particular location, but over several thousand years. And the searchers arbitrarily limit the search in a nonsensical way and miss their target.

Not his best.

Next up: Shadows of Self by Brandon Sanderson. A sequel to Alloy of Law.

Read some fantastic short fiction this weekend - "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson and "The Seventh Man" by Haruki Murakami. Loved them both.

Still working my way through Carrie Fisher's Postcards From the Edge as well.

Finished Wool, now about a third of the way into Shift, which tells some of the backstory before rejoining the "present." Something seems weird about the timeline, though. AFAICT from Shift, "now" is roughly 2180 - but parts of Wool talk about "centuries" spent in the silos, which would push "now" closer to the 2300s or later.

Hopefully, the later chapters (or the third book, Dust) will clear this up.

Not sure where I left off in my posting here, but I've finished the first two books in Robin Hobb's Assassin trilogy. I'm mostly enjoying them, a solid 3.5 stars. But right now, taking a short break with some short stories from Baen. Then, when I get home to my usual tools, I have the latest Ava Lee book from Ian Hamilton that just released in Canada on tap. After a bit of DRM cleanup, of course.

I "saw" the mystery from very soon in and was more wondering how Cadfael was going to fit everything together than in the actual solving of the mystery. I'm not the dullest knife on the chopping block...

I like the anime better as well. the manga was limited by being in the 4koma format [4 panels, top to bottom. pretty limiting] and the anime really allowed things to flow better.
