It's not that your Kobo is picky; it's that the old cables are worn out and need to be replaced. Contacts wear and corrode. They bend and stop making good (enough) contact. Wires break. It happens. Just replace the cables when it does.

Good to hear! USB cable like that tend to be cheap and prone to breakage (if not complete, just a critical strand or two within them) which is why trying another cable is the 1st troubleshooting tip. Some Kobo devices do tend to be a little picky though. Not sure what the actual physical reason for that is.

Is there a patch somewhere that can circumvent the KA1's dialog that asks if I *really, really, really* want to connect to a computer?

It drives me crazy. I'm used to just connecting the Kindle, and it shows up. Half the time I'm sitting there wondering why Calibre doesn't detect the reader ("did the USB connection break again due to some Windows update?!") until I remember that I have to confirm the connection on the reader after plugging it in.

(Yes, I know, if you don't connect the reader and cancel the dialog, you could probably read while the reader charges. I never do that.)

I believe it is something with the Kobo. One of the cables that doesn't work is brand new, never been used. The other has always worked and still works with everything else, and has never moved from my desktop. Perhaps the contacts within the Kobo are faulty.

You likely weren't paying attention to Kobo when their early devices came out to hear the roar of people screaming about the fact that they couldn't read on the device while it was charging on USB . Well, actually back then you just couldn't read it while charging generally IIRC.

(note that I don't have a horse in this race as I don't use USB to charge and I really don't plug it in for other purposes often enough for it to bother me)

"New" is not necessarily synonymous with "good".

It's possible that the contacts in your Kobo's micro-USB port are faulty but I think that's unlikely. If it were a fault with the port or it's connection to the system board inside then no cables would work, or at best they all would work intermittently. But if you have 1 reliably good cable out of 3 then you probably have 2 cables that are faulty or off-spec to some degree.

If you don't use USB to charge, then how do you charge it???

I think you mean you don't use a PC to charge, but rather a USB charger...

I don't think so, and all readers I've had have the same function: ask when you connect a device to a PC if you want to charge it, or use it as storage device.

I have the same. I got a cable, brand new, that simply won't charge my Android tablet (Galaxy Note 8.0, so an older device). It will charge the device it came with: my Yotaphone.

I have my Kobo Aura ONE! Anyone know how long I should let it charge before attempting to set it up?

EDIT: Never mind, forgot I had already downloaded a user manual a month or two ago. Senior citizen memory...

EDIT2: Actually, the manual doesn't say whether or not it is OK to set it up while charging, it just says to charge for 4 hours the first time it is charged....

I think it is ok for you to put a few books onto it. Don't you use Calibre anyway? Then it will be tethered to your computer and get juice this way anyway. So there should be no harm done, if you just put a couple of books on it, so it doesn't have to process a lot.

The four hours charging time are surely meant to be had before actually loading it with lots to process and reading with it.

On the other hand, you won't be able to use it before it has had some loading time anyway, so you won't gain much by putting books onto it.

It is not charging from the computer, it is connected to my old Sony wall charger.

After a half hour, I couldn't take seeing the set up screen any longer, so I did set up and sync via wifi. Now I'm just waiting again until I can take the device off the charger.

Meanwhile, the device is happily sleeping and wifi and lights currently shut off.

They said it will ship in another 5-7 days and sent a waybill to return both the defective devices. But at this point, I am worried that I might get a dud again. I know this process is basically lottery but I want to weigh some options and get some insight on this from fellow owners. Thanks in advance.

Ok. I received the replacement. Added the photos to the same link. Gradient again. Kobo offered to send another replacement but I'm sending both the replacements back and going to wait for the new batch to hit the streets. I don't have much confidence that their current stock is any good. Kinda disappointed how this has gone so far. I'm not sure if the perfect screen some people got here were the exception. If they were, I guess Kindle Voyage has company in regards to its gradient issue.
