Jon eBay is really safe if you use their feedback system as a guide who to buy from. Only buy from those with highest reputation. Read all negative feedback of the seller and make your decision.

Craigslist is another matter. I wouldn't buy anything off it.

DRM is not an issue here. When Google Play blocks you, you can't buy, read, download via app, desktop or any method. You definitely can't sync either. You just get a blank page on the desktop saying your country isn't supported and on the app you get pop-ups saying the same thing. It's an issue people need to be aware of. It's not just books but music and videos too. Only apps seem to be accessible.

My thread on it.

I now download via USB all my books from Amazon for Kindle and by this method they come as AZW3 or AZW and therefore do not have to worry about KFX. May seem like a lot of work but I am quite adept at it now.

Amazon's customer service will tell you if it's blacklisted. You just give them the SN.

Agreed! Most people who have problem eBay transactions aren't checking feedback or don't know how to interpret it if they do check. I've bought many things off eBay over the years and I've been a member for a long, long time, back to the date where it was truly wild and wooly! Problems are rare if common sense is used and appropriate questions asked before bidding/buying.

I happen to own a used Kindle purchased on eBay....

I buy and sell regularly, since old days, too (back when occasional sellers selling their personally owned items were not treated like second-class citizens in favor of high-volume professional retailers) and have rarely had a problem as a buyer. The one or two times in 16 years that I have, eBay stepped in and resolved it for me.
As I seller, I have almost never had a problem until this past month, which I will call "The Month of the Stupid eBayer" with people bidding stupidly and cancelling or asking me to cancel their bid(s) for no reason at the last minute. I wish I could give those folks negative feedback.

Maybe I should go to the vent and rant thread.

p.s. I have sold a Kindle on eBay...wonder if graycyn bought it...

I'm curious: how do you know that a Kindle book is DRM'ed or not? Is there some secret code there?

Under product details, a DRM free book will say

Simultaneous Device Usage: Unlimited

That phrasing is interesting. Notice that it doesn't say "DRM-free". It just says that you can use it on as many devices as you want. It doesn't explicitly state it, but it is implied by it being a "kindle edition" that the devices are running kindle software.

For older kindle formats that unlimited feature was implemented by the absence of DRM. In the case of KFX (the topic of this thread) all books delivered in that format have DRM regardless of that statement in the product details. However those books are encoded so that they can be freely transferred to any kindle device that supports the format and they will work. So for KFX "Simultaneous Device Usage: Unlimited" means less locked down, but not completely free of DRM.

It's an important distinction to make, I think. The more Amazon moves toward KFX, the less "Simultaneous Device Usage: Unlimited" will be able to be used to assume it means a particular title is DRM free (given that KFX encryption isn't reversed for a while). The terms really have become effectively synonymous for some.

It will be a while before people will understand that it literally means, "works on any kindle device" (with regards to KFX).

Books from publisher Tor Books have this in the book description - "At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied". I guess that's not true now. This book has that phrase, but not "Simultaneous Device Usage: Unlimited".

The mobi, and Kf8 formats of Tor books will indeed be completely DRM-free. Any books from Tor distributed in the KFX format, however, would be limited to Kindle devices only (any Kindle device) by Amazon's standard KFX encryption. Which in my opinion, goes against Tor's stated reasons for going DRM-free in the first place. I'd actually love to see Tor make a stand on this very issue. Perhaps they already have, and there are no Tor books being distributed in the KFX format. Who's to know?

Sorry, but that message about no DRM is no longer there for all Tor eBooks.
