This is quite a relief to read. Being able to "alf" my books is what keeps me happily buying them.

I think it's too early to take this as a user unfriendly move by Amazon. Historically DRM comes first and then ways around it come next. Hopefully that will keep on happening. Amazon seems to be following a kind of natural upgrade progression. Nothing about it seems to be anti-backup.

Most broadband providers provide a router/modem and that includes WiFi.

But to make DRM free KFX useful, we'll need to be able to convert it to a useful format.

I think this has been hinted at by some of those who have posted already, but I'd say the difference is that the US telecom industry is more interested in nickle-and-diming its customers to death.

So they offer us the privilege (*coughcough*) of being able to rent a separate wireless router from them and make a point to imply gloom-and-doom to those who chose to buy their own ("When you rent your wireless router from us, you'll have access to our customer service expertise when you have problems with your wifi service." Actually, it's more likely to be phrased as a negative - "We won't be able to help you if you have problems").

<sigh> I can't help but wonder, if all U.S. telecom companies included Wi-Fi built into their standard routers, would you be complaining that they "bundle in features we don't need just to over-charge us! They should offer Wi-Fi devices separately so people can choose to save a few bucks if they don't need it!"?

If not you, I'm sure there are a vocal subset out there that will complain no matter what. Some folks just need to hate.

Comcast doesn't charge any more for their all-in-one telephone/WiFi/Internet modem/router then they do for just a modem and just a telephone modem.

Besides, most people who have Internet in home do have at least one WiFi capable device. Could be the TV, phone, tablet, etc. These days it makes no sense to have broadband with no WiFi.

Indeed. I just got a $120 credit from Verizon for my mom for being incorrectly charged for rental of a piece of equipment we returned over a year before (thankfully I still had the email receipt for the return!)
And Comcast incorrectly charges me virtually anytime I deal with them.

I wish my old ISP would do that I paid five years for equipment that didn't exist. Never got a dime back when they wanted it back to send out an upgrade I found out what that rental charge actually was. I guess the installer stole it. $300 is what they owe me.

Buy one of those too! The Google OnHub routers look pretty sweet (though I don't have one, yet).
Maybe once my internet speed is quicker, but for now, my current wifi is good enough.

Hm, OK.

In the Netherlands, you *can't* buy your own modem when you're on cable. (You can with some forms of DSL.)

We have only got one cable provider left, AFAIK (Ziggo), and the problem they often face is people complaining about the Wifi range. People (still) expect a single router to reach the entire house. That was probably possible in 2001, but not in 2016.

Wifi is so hard to get stable around here, especially when you're in an apartment, that I only use cables for everything, except for my phone, tablet, and laptop.

I hope there will be some way to un-DRM KFX and EPUB's downloaded with ADE 3.x and 4.x. I'd love to help in cracking the DRM, but I'm not a cryptographer. I doubt I have the required knowledge to even get started.

If Adobe moved to a new DRM, they would piss off a lot of people who are using old versions of ADE that will never be upgraded and never support a new DRM. So that's a very bad business decision if they were to force a new DRM on us.
