I just tried using Manage Your Kindle to download a book destined for my Paperwhite 1st generation, which doesn't support the new enhanced fonts, etc. It worked just fine but when I put it in Calibre, all set up with Apprentice Alf, it said the book had DRM and it couldn't read or convert it.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I do still have K4PC v1.17.1 so it's not an immediate problem but I do want to be prepared. I do have automatic updates unchecked. Calibre normally does my conversions just fine so it's not Calibre. I'm guessing that the DRM is keyed on this book to the device and not to K4PC, and that K4PC normally does the actual decryption. But it can't decrypt this book keyed to the device. I'm doing a lot of guessing here but it seems sensible. If that's true then downloading for USB transfer isn't going to work so what is going on here? I have to assume you guys have actually tried this and aren't just theorizing. I've been around too long to think that. What am I missing? Barry |

We can't discuss the process here. You will need to go to the place you get the tools for answers.

I have added a note about the update to the FAQs at my github repository, along with download links for Kindle for PC/Mac version 1.17. (Amazon currently works with versions back to 1.15.)
Now that KFX is being used on Kindle for Mac/PC, it should be possible for clever developers to more easily reverse engineer the format and the encryption. If someone comes up with such a solution I'll include it in the tools. |

I backup to Calibre and get it to disinfect on import. There is an extra setup step that you are missing regarding the device key. Enough said for this forum. You know where to go for the rest of the info (for the lurkers, that's Apprentice Alf's blog) My question, which is the earliest generation of Kindle that supports kfx? |

ETA: The 6th and 7th generation devices were introduced without KFX support and it was added in later firmware updates. The 8th generation devices all ship with KFX support. Last edited by jhowell; 01-06-2017 at 08:45 AM. |

So my old Kindle Keyboard will be able to download (or I can download for it) my purchases in the KF8 format until such time as KFX is reversed? Great! Shouldn't be too long (relatively), now that kfx is hitting the desktop.
