If you have a ka1, do you have any gradient on the normal light? |

Bought mine a week ago and I can see the green blotch too (using natural light) but it's very faint that I don't mind it. Yours in the picture seems severe compared to mine.

The severity varies (as we can expect from the adjustable light). This is at its worst. With some combinations, it's just a slight smudge at the bottom. I am much more bothered by the gradient.

After buying one in November and returning it because I couldn't exchange it (because of a big green blotch at the bottom of the screen), I bought another one at Indigo between Christmas and NYE while it was still in stock on their website.
I received it on the 31st and it has a big gradient at the bottom, both with and without the natural light enabled. I'll try to exchange it, but I'm starting to lose confidence in this product... |

If you are in Canada, try exchanging with Indigo. If not, contact Kobo through their FB. Their good response over there almost makes me forgive their terrible CS. Almost. |

Brand new owner of a Kobo Aura One and thought I'd post my initial thoughts.
I really like the reader--I don't detect any faults pinholes/gradients in the screen--so either I have a near perfect screen or my eyesight is bad enough that I don't notice the imperfections. Either way I'm happy ![]() Text is much crisper than my Aura HD--and I love the larger screen size. I've only had the One for a little over 24 hours now, but so far haven't noticed any battery drain problems--currently it's at 92% after one day of charging and reading for about 45 minutes. Totally acceptable. It's running the latest firmware--and I know that has fixed battery issues for a lot of people. Also, I'm not currently using a sleep cover but I do have one on order from Amazon, so that may affect things a little. The minor quibble I have so far is the lighting--the light is much much brighter on my Aura One than on any of my other lighted readers. 10% brightness on my Aura One is comparable to about 35%-40% brightness on my Aura HD. I'm not sure how I feel about the "Natural Light" feature either--the nighttime mode is way too "orange" for me. I ended up turning the "auto" feature off for both brightness and natural light. It wasn't working well at all--adjusting up and down constantly with no change in the external lighting. Very distracting. Also regarding the lighting--I find the adjustments to finicky. I had a hard time manually adjusting to a light level low enough to be comfortable reading in bed. It seems that the adjustment goes by 0% from 1% to 5% then goes in 5% increments. 5% is a little too dim and 10% a little to bright. I'll have to take a look at the available patches to see if there is something I can use there to allow finer adjustments to the brightness level. Even at 0% the reader emits some light--but that being said when I was attempting to adjust the lighting to a comfortable level last night I did get somehow get the light to turn off completely a few times--had to use the upswipe on the left side of the screen to turn the light back on to see what I was doing. Swiping to change the light level works better on my HD--I find it to be inconsistent on the One. The firmware version may have something to do with that. I'm still running an older firmware on my HD--I think it's 3.15, but the One is running the latest version. All and all--I really like the Kobo Aura One--for any of you trying to decide whether you should get one, I say do it! |

You are right about the selfadjusting light. It's total bull. Mine is turned off. And I do miss the physical lights button as I tend to swipe too far all the time and then sit there in the dark and have to fumble for the right spot on the screen to turn the light on again. The orange only bothers me, when I see it in its final stage from one minute to the next. Like when I switch off the bedroom lights and then turn on the reader near/past bedtime. If it turns more and more orange while I read the later it gets, I'm fine with it. But in the end, it is just awesome reading on a booksized page, isn't it? |

Bleh, the KA1 in factory default settings (as purchased in September 2016) is a nuisance to setup under Windows 10 build 1607. It seems to suffer from the Win10 USB-bug.
I can get the KA1 to be recognized on the first connect only. If I then eject it, Windows will then always complain about a 'malfunctioning device that cannot be recognized'. It is also possible the connection drops during file transfers. The solution seems to be to manually download firmware 4.2.8110, and keep it ready. Connect the reader, put the firmware onto it (if I remember correctly, KoboRoot.tgz in the .kobo folder), and disconnect. The reader will update. Uder firmware 4.2.8110 I haven't had any connection failures. If you can't get the reader to be detected anymore, you can use NirSoft's USBDeview to remove the USB assignments for Kobo and Unkown Device, reboot, and then connect the reader again. Note: Nirsoft USBDeview is a third party utility. Use at your own risk. (Although in practice, the worst thing that could happen is that you have to reinstall a device if you remove the wrong one.) To be honest, I think it's weird Kobo wipes even the firmware when resetting the reader. AFAIK, a Kindle just keeps the version that is installed. It seems after jackassing around for almost 4 months, the KA1 finally works as I hoped it would in the beginning of September. Last edited by Katsunami; 01-05-2017 at 05:54 PM. |

Note: you can adjust the light at 12% or 7% by dragging the slider. It's a bit hit and miss tough. And yes, the KA1 is bright. Very bright. I'll put it next to my KPW1 tomorrow; I mostly have that at 10-12 out of 24, which is 40-50%. I feel the KA1 is about as bright at 10%. I wonder who uses the 50% or even 100% settings...
Adding a bit of the warm Natural Light makes the light softer, more creamy, and less bright. |

If there are updates for Windows 10 that solves this for all firmwares, then I haven't got them yet... and Windows Update says everything is up to date.
