Alexa Helps Get Dinner on the Table Easier: Amazon Restaurants Adds Voice Ordering to its Service

Quote:
Customers can now simply ask Alexa to reorder meals from Amazon Restaurants for an easy, fast way to get dinner in an hour or less

All restaurants in the service are available for voice shopping through Alexa starting today
Quote:
SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 5, 2017-- Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN) today announced that Prime members can voice-order their next meal through Amazon Restaurants on their Alexa-enabled devices including the Amazon Echo and Echo Dot. The new Alexa skill allows customers to reorder from any restaurant available on the service in more than 20 cities by saying, “Alexa, order from Amazon Restaurants,” and have any meal they’ve ordered before delivered to their door for free in an hour or less.

“Customers now have a hands-free, hassle-free way to reorder any meal from Amazon Restaurants using their voice to get dinner on the table,” said Gus Lopez, general manager of Amazon Restaurants at Amazon. “We are excited to leverage the innovative Alexa technology and give Prime members another easy way for Amazon Restaurants to take care of dinnertime with no menu markups and free delivery in one hour or less.”

Prime members can ask Alexa to reorder from Amazon Restaurants by saying a restaurant name or cuisine type, for example, “Alexa, order sushi from Amazon Restaurants.” The service pulls a customer’s order history from a specified restaurant or cuisine type and lists meal options available for reorder. The selected meal is then sent for delivery to a customer’s default address.

They had a news article on one of the local Dallas/Fort Worthless TV stations last night during the ten o'clock newscast. Actually it is more of a fluffcast than a newscast, but I digress... A couple with two young children bought an Echo Dot for Christmas and set it up in their living room. They didn't set the parental controls. Their six year old daughter began experimenting with it, as children are inclined to do. The parents were not in the room. The next day mom started getting Amazon packages delivered on a regular basis, none of which she or hubby had ordered. The daughter had ordered lots of goodies adding up to over a couple of hundred dollars. Mom quickly learned how to set parental controls. She said it took like 5 seconds to turn on parental controls and was doing the interview to warn other parents to do the same before allowing their children access to the device. Duh!!!

So, did mom contact Amazon to get a refund?

What, and break the little girl's heart?

Parents pay for their lesson in diligence, and princess gets some late xmas gifts, that's what I think.

Is that a typo, auto fill or on purpose in the first line?
Either way, too funny.

No, she was actually pretty cool about it and they decided to donate the items to local charities/places. The little girl had ordered $150 doll house so they gave that to a local children's hospital. She had also ordered 5 pounds of cookies, so they gave that away too. I'm not sure what else she ordered. Very refreshing to see the parents take the blame on themselves, and it clearly was their fault, and also refreshing that they didn't let the little girl keep her Dot bounty.

I assume you mean my intentional dissing of FW by calling it Fort Worthless. It was intentional, and they deserve that title.

I assume then that they knew ahead of time that the Dot could be used for ordering by anyone in the household until they set up the proper controls?

Personally, I wish that Amazon devices came with purchasing disabled. That would require customers to actively enable the feature and eliminate the possibility of orders by those unaware of the feature.

The mom was not clear about whether she knew about the parental controls and/or purchasing controls before her daughter went on a spending spree. She only said that after the fact it "literally only took five seconds for [her] to turn off purchasing."

I agree, Amazon should be more open about the FACT that their devices will come with purchasing ENABLED and parental controls DISABLED. Although as I recall, you do have to have one-click purchasing ENABLED before Alexa can make purchases by voice. However, a lot of customers will already have that enabled.

I agree that Amazon, ostensibly in the interest of making things easy for their customers, seems to be making it TOO easy. To a fault.

I hate 1-click ordering and have it disabled, but unfortunately, I can't disable it for everything:

Quote:
You’ve disabled 1-Click ordering everywhere

Note: 1-Click ordering is always enabled for digital video, Kindle books, MP3s, and other digital purchases.
What's Amazon's problem? I want to see all purchases in a cart before I commit. That will prevent accidental orders on my part.
