Here is another beta with three changes:

• Fix: For word count, text from all files was appended together without a space in between.
• Update: Only write changes if they are different to the current values.
• New: Spanish translation thanks to Terisa de morgan.

The first has been there for a long time and meant if there were multiple files inside an epub, the word count would be one word per file. Not much, but a bug no matter what.

The other change is to only update the statistics in the metadata if the statistic has actually changed. The main point of this is that the modified timestamp of the book will not get changed if none of the statistic have actually changed. There is an option in the configuration to force the update if that is what you want. And my apologies to Terisa as there are two new strings to translate.

As always, tell me if there are any problems. I am aiming for release on the weekend if anyone is doing a translation.

I updated the word count for my whole collection with the beta most of the word counts now are a 1-2% less than previous but as I mostly use it for comparative purposes I needed to update them all. Using a standard is always better so went ahead and updated for all took 12min for around 900 epubs.

Why? Mainly because it can take as many minutes to count a chunky DOCX, MOBI or PDF as it takes seconds to count the EPUB I just created by converting the same DOCX, MOBI or PDF.

Deleting the DOCX, MOBI and or PDF before doing the count is not a viable option, nor is promoting EPUB up the Preferred Input Format pecking order. The latter results is me wasting time doing unintentional EPUB to EPUB conversions and then wondering why the changes I just made to the Input format aren't reflected in the output EPUB.

Are you doing a page count? If you use the ADE algorithm, it will always use the epub if there is one available. And if there isn't an epub, it will do the other statistics, but it won't do the page count.

But, what you suggest is good idea. Adding the output format as the first format in the list is easy. Adding an option is slightly harder. Mainly because I have to write the label for the option How about

Check this option if you want the statistics to be calculated using the format that you have selected as the Preferred Output Format for calibre conversions. If this is not available, or the option is not checked, the first format found in the Preferred Input Format will be used.

@david - here's my settings, and the option as I envisage it



IMO Pronouns shouldn't be used in labels, in tooltips okay, but in labels nay. I also prefer to put any conditional clause first, it makes the intent emphatic, putting it at the end tends to shroud it in mystery - i.e. Churchillian good, Hitchockian not. But I'll only look it at once, so it matters hardly a jot

Some users may not be familiar with the term 'Preferred Output Format'. Might it be an idea to make the label dynamic and substitute the current value of calibre prefs[output_format] into the label?

So for me the label would read 'Use EPUB if available?' whereas for a Kindle user the label would read 'Use AZW3 if available?'

The tooltip could be more specific (and also dynamic) and start something like 'Your current calibre Preferred Output Format is set to xxx. Check this option if you want the statistics to be calculated using this format if available. If not checked or xxx is not available ... etc'

BTW my Library used ADE page counts historically (Astak PEz).

I now use my K4NT
CP won't count using ADE when only a AZW3 exists
I really don't want to recalc all those (besides, changes the Last Modified flag)

A count method sb just an algorithm to use (assumes the filoe can be processed) If I want to count a Kindle Book using ADE rules, why not?

In the latest beta, if you do not use the ICU method for counting ADE pages, you will get a really incorrect number of words.

If columns are not specified for the Word Count or Readability statistics, the new option should probably be disabled (greyed-out).

I suggest this for the tooltip, and/or 1st post description.

Check this option to use the format specified in the Preferred Output Format setting to calculate statistics. If that format is absent, or this option is not checked (default), statistics will be calculated using whichever of the available formats appears highest in the Preferred Input Format list. The Preferred Output and Input settings are specified in Preferences->Behaviour.

I disagree with spoon feeding users, especially on things they're only likely to use once, better to encourage them to read tooltips and/or doco. If you treat people as dummies they will behave accordingly.

Aside, I don't see a tooltip for the Preferred Input Formats list in Preferences->Behaviour.

That doesn't make sense. There is no ICU method for counting ADE pages and the only overlapping code between the word count and the ADE page count is opening the epub for counting.

But, assuming you meant there was a big difference between the non-ICU word count with the beta and the word count with the released version, I need examples. And a definition of "really incorrect". When I compared the two, the difference is the number of files in the book. That is expected with the fix I put into the code for the word count.

If the difference is bigger than that, then I need actual examples I can look at including the counts you are seeing with the two versions.
