A few freebie and sale DRM-free offerings to consider:
Gog.com (only sell DRM-free games, often with bonus extras) is holding their Winter Sale, and are offering a free video game until the end of today (Dec 2nd, another 14 hours to go, according to the timer): Neverwinter Nights Diamond, a popular fantasy role-playing game (Wikipedia) for Windows @ Gog.com. This version comes with the soundtrack and extra artwork. You can also earn bonus XP points by doing activities and via shopping the sales discounts, which may add up to another free game if you accumulate enough. And they offer a substantial page of regular older freebie games as well, which you can see listed here. Speaking of DRM-free games, I'm going to mention that if you happened to like the O'Reilly Humble Book Bundle for computer programmers, the current Humble Staff Picks Bundle: Nick for under $5 USD, good until Tuesday, contains two high-quality programming games from Zachtronics: one which simulates assembly language programming, and the other a robot factory. These are very well-reputed in educational gaming circles (and were on my wishlist, so an auto-buy for me), and you can also try some freebie flash games along the same lines over at the Zachtronics site. And BookViewCafé has rotated their monthly specials, with a lot of 99 cent deals, especially sfnal ones. |

New Humble Bundle is up, and it's for:
Humble Book Bundle Neil Gaiman featuring prose, poetry, and comic book work from the popular sfnal author. This looks to have a lot of repeats from the previous Neil Gaiman Rarities HB, but it looks like there are two new audiobooks at the top tier, featuring dramatic readings by the author himself of his own work. ETA: and one in the middle. ETA 2: which turns out to be a video recording of a live performance show. But I guess you could rip the audio for portable listening? Fixed tiers of $1, $8, and $15, no new titles added next week. Quote:
Bundle of Holding is offering a hybrid RPG gamebook & comic book bundle for the Valiant Universe, with the gaming based on the company's popular superhero comics. You get at least 2 gamebooks and a whole bunch of 1st-in-series graphics novels volumes. There looks to be quite a bit of overlap with HB's long-ago Valiant bundle, but there also seem to be some new titles which weren't in that. BoH doesn't seem to have a way to top up your pledge, so please be sure of which tier you want to get before buying. Last week's Worldbuilder Toolkit +4 & Worldbuilder Tooklit +2 full of DM aids are still available. Last edited by ATDrake; 12-07-2016 at 03:21 PM. |

New freebie from Wildside Press, for:
Wildside Press Presents: Discover A New Author!: Lyn McConchie containing a Sherlock Holmes pastiche story by the eponymous author. This series of free ebooks is designed to promote authors you may not have tried before. In this case, Lyn McConchie. Lyn McConchie has been publishing collections of new Sherlock Holmes stories through Wildside Press for the last 6 years, and this volume showcases her work with an original cat-themed Holmes story, "Pinned to a Crime," plus a biographical note. Bundle of Holding has added two new comic book TPB volumes to their combo RPG gamebook and comic book source bundle for Valiant Universe for the popular superhero comic book setting. Their new offering is for Through the Breach, a Lovecraftian Wild West steampunk game. Expiring soon at StoryBundle: Leading Ladies Fantasy and Immerse or Die 3, consisting mainly of curated indie sfnal titles, and NaNoWriMo Writing Tools 2016 curated by Star Wars tie-in author Kevin J. Anderson. There's also one more day to go on the Humble Book Bundle Science + Discovery presented by Make: consisting of DIY introductory how-to and reference books for the home tech hobbyist, with a focus mostly on space stuff, but also some good home experiment volumes for teaching yourself and/or the kiddies practical demonstrations of chemistry, biology, forensic science, and more. |

New Humble Bundle is up, and it's for:
Humble Book Bundle Code Your Own Games full of DIY computer programming books on Exactly What It Says In The Title, from Apress (owned by Microsoft, IIRC). Platforms such as Android, Swift (Mac/iOS), HTML5 webapps, and various popular multi-OS gaming engines are covered. Fixed tiers of $1, $8 (more books added next week), and $15. Quote:
For aficionados of their m/m romance and other fiction, LGBT specialty publisher Dreamspinner Press has a coupon offer for $10 off a $25 order on their website, using coupon code HOLIDAY2016 through December 15th, probably Eastern Time. Technically, the wording is “a $10 gift on your order of $25 or more”, but I think it's an actual discount and not, like, $10 worth of random free ebooks added to your library. YMMV. New Humble Bundle is up, and it's for:
Humble Book Bundle Astronomy presented by multinational academic/textbook publisher Springer Verlag, chock-full of educational and informative space-based science titles. This is really nifty, and covers stuff like spacecraft and the history of asteroids and archaeoastronomy and professional eclipse observation and DIY stargazing, and is an auto-buy for me. Fixed tiers of $1, $8, and $15 (no new titles added next week). Quote:
StoryBundle has updated its Immerse or Die bundle of mostly sfnal indie titles with a freebie anthology of short stories, if you're a newsletter subscriber. Only one more day to get either, or the 2016 NaNoWriMo Writing Tools bundle, which also expires tomorrow. Bundle of Holding's new offers are for popular RPG games from UK-based publisher Cubicle 7: Cubicle 7 Worlds containing a miscellaneous assortment of smaller games, and Cthulhu Britannica, a Lovecraftian London-based supplement spin-off of the highly popular Call of Cthulhu RPG franchise. Last week's Through the Breach, a Lovecraftian Wild West RPG from Wyrd Miniatures based on the Malifaux miniatures line, is still available. Last edited by ATDrake; 12-21-2016 at 02:46 PM. |

Free, two 'first in series' from a popular SF (and fantasy) author
Ark Royal by Christopher Nuttall His first best seller, Book 1 of 8 in Ark Royal (8 Book Series) Space Navy, Seventy years ago, the interstellar supercarrier Ark Royal was the pride of the Royal Navy. But now, her weapons are outdated and her solid-state armour nothing more than a burden on her colossal hull. She floats in permanent orbit near Earth, a dumping ground for the officers and crew the Royal Navy wishes to keep out of the public eye. But when a deadly alien threat appears, the modern starships built by humanity are no match for the powerful alien weapons. Ark Royal and her mismatched crew must go on the offensive, buying time with their lives And yet, with a drunkard for a Captain, an over-ambitious first officer and a crew composed of reservists and the dregs of the service, do they have even the faintest hope of surviving ... The Empire's Corps by Christopher Nuttall Book 1 of 13 in The Empire's Corps (13 Book Series) The Galactic Empire is dying and chaos and anarchy are breaking out everywhere. After a disastrous mission against terrorists on Earth itself, Captain Edward Stalker of the Terran Marine Corps makes the mistake of speaking truth to power, telling one of the most powerful men in the Empire a few home truths. As a result, Captain Stalker and his men are unceremoniously exiled to Avalon, a world right on the Rim of the Empire. It should have been an easy posting ... https://www.amazon.com/s/?url=search...topher+Nuttall https://www.amazon.co.uk/s/?url=sear...topher+Nuttall https://www.amazon.ca/s/?url=search-...topher+Nuttall |

New Humble Bundle is up, and it's for:
Humble Book Bundle Dude Care with non-fiction presumably aimed at guys, with a mix of business self-help, personal grooming/fitness, “lite” reference for heavy subjects like politics and economics, and cookbooks from publisher Callisto. Fixed tiers of $1, $8 (new titles added next week), and $15. This looks like a reasonably diverse spread of stuff and I'm morbidly curious about the marijuana cookbook and would probably use the sushi one and I like pop-reference titles sometimes, so I think I'm going to splurge. Quote:
Groupees' Top Cow Comics Bundle which has quite a number of TPB volumes at the $15 top tier, is expiring within the day, if you think you might like to have it. Bundle of Holding's RPG gamebook offerings now include Elven Papercraft for printable cut-and-assemble models to enhance your tabletop gameplay. As for the actual gamebooks, they have Family Friendly RPGs +2 containing an assortment of games across various genres suitable for or directly aimed at playing with the kiddies. Also, Cubicle Worlds 7 featuring a set of fantasy games in international settings, and Cthulhu Britannica with London-based Lovecraftiana, both out from publisher Cubicle Entertainment, are still available. |

Free again from an author I recommend
Black Goats (Wine of the Gods Book 3) by Pam Uphoff This edition has been edited to remove or minimize some parts that have been criticized as offensive as well as not meshing well with the general tone of the rest of the series. Eight centuries ago the Wizards of Scoone rose in rebellion and overthrew the Tyrant Wizard. But not before he trapped the eight most powerful in a spellweb that chained their magic and changed their bodies into the form of goats. The deposed wizard took his goats with him into exile. And time passed. Ash is a quiet village in the foothills. The home of three Old Gods, a retired wizard herding sheep with his huge black goats, and the few surviving mages and witches. But two generations later, the young witches and mages are looking outward toward a world that has grown and changed. And while the Old Gods think of ways to increase the numbers of magically talented people, the old wizard loses control over the black goats. Eight powerful wizards, trapped in the shape of goats for eight hundred years. And they are about to prove that while they may have been fighting a tyrant, they were not themselves good men. And they haven't changed. https://www.amazon.com/s/?url=search...=%20Pam+Uphoff https://www.amazon.co.uk/s/?url=sear...=%20Pam+Uphoff https://www.amazon.ca/s/?url=search-...=%20Pam+Uphoff |

Following along, free
Comet Fall (Wine of the Gods Book 6) by Pam Uphoff A thousand years ago, they said, a comet fell. Nearly everyone had died. Now a small one is going to hit in six months . . . and a planet killer in eight years. The young witches and wizards of Ash have a lot to learn, and a lot of growing up to do. Rustle Neverdaut is going to be a powerful witch, if she survives bullies, high society, rapists and her own great-grandmother. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B009RYGE1E/ https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B009RYGE1E/ https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B009RYGE1E/ |

New Humble Bundle is up, and it's for:
Humble Book Bundle Pathfinder Worldscape presented by Paizo and Dynamite Comics, containing a mix of RPG gamebooks and some accompanying comics since apparently the Worldscape setting involves crossovers between several popular pulp fantasy franchises such as Edgar Rice Burroughs' Barsooom and Robert E. Howard's Red Sonja. There are also two freebies offered for signing up for the newsletter. ETA: You will need to pass the RECAPTCHA for this offer, by clicking the submit button for the newsletter box, waiting for the error message, and then scrolling down to the payment area, clicking the Free Tier, checking the not-a-robot box, and then finally clicking the Get Free Thingy button. Fixed tiers of $1, $8, $15 for the ebooks (no new titles added next week, Paizo titles are watermarked PDF redeemable via keys for their website, IIRC; Dynamite Comics are DRM-free direct downloads) with an additional $25 tier for 4 Humble Bundle exclusive Worldscape Special comics from Dynamite. There looks to be a certain amount of overlap with the previous Paizo bundle and other Dynamite offerings, but there's probably enough new stuff to be worth it for hardcore fans. Quote:
Bundle of Holding has a non-gamebook special this week, for Murder Parties which contains themed kits for those retro proto-LARP dinner party games where all the guests pretend to be solving a murder mystery (Wikipedia) with printable props and scripts. You can play settings including Hawaiian Luau, Classic Hollywood, Wild West, Superhero Funeral, Magic School Attack, and more. Last week's Elven Papercraft full of printable cut-and-paste models to enhance your actual RPG tabletop gameplay is still available. ETA 2: There's a full freebie “lite” version of one of the murder mystery games to try before you buy from the publisher, available to download if you sign up for their newsletter: Way Out West Apparently, this is also playable in a kids version for younger guests, and you can request a German-language version as well. And the Book View Café has a number of monthly specials at 99 cents and up, in addition to the freebie offer of James Hetley's fantasy Ghost Point. There are several story collections in it, as well as Vonda N. McIntyre's The Adventure of the Field Theorems for just $1.49. This is a nifty Sherlock Holmes pastiche novella where he looks into a supposedly sfnal case for Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I own an old paperback of the anthology this was originally published in, and it's a fun read. Last edited by ATDrake; 01-11-2017 at 02:46 PM. |
