I love my new laptop. All the basics are now installed and what I didn't want has been uninstalled. It was relatively painless, except for the long time it took to do the Windows updates and getting rid of WPS office, which took several reboots. With the SSD it starts very fast, though I will need to keep an eye on space. It also comes with a 1TB HDD, so I've moved my Dropbox, Steam and Origin folders to that drive.
Later in the week I'm treating myself to The Sims 4, which is on sale at the moment with a 65% discount, so I could add some expansion packs to it. I will need to research which I think I will like best. |

He just needs paper plates to use while I do the dishes. It's what keeps everything clean. We don't use regular glasses. Always plastic disposables because they are too hard to clean.
I have enough dishes for a family of four and the smallest shallowest sink to wash them in. Just like out child size bathtub the sink matches. I thought the sinks on base back in his military days were small these are half their size. Sent from my XT1528 |

I'm looking on houseplan websites to find house lay-outs that can be converted to homes for my sims. I used to spend hours converting houseplans to sim houses on graph paper. I will have to get a pack tomorrow.
It's very satisfying when a sim house you've adapted from a houseplan works great in the game. |

I finally got my last Christmas gift from mom. They sent it to the wrong address but it's here now. I love it. The cup holder is useless though.

I got about 100 recently and shelved without cataloging so it was easy to start over. Well until Google speech recognition gets silly. I have 121 left to put in. There will be 665 when I am done cataloging. I am not going to detail it out as it is mostly to make sure I don't get too many duplicates. |

That's the productivity suite of choice on my Android tablet. The free version handles everything I need to do, and is the fullest featured of the ones I looked at, freeware or payware. (There is a no-ads payware version with a yearly subscription fee, but the ads are unobtrusive enough that I haven't bothered.) WPS Office is available for other platforms as well, but on desktop and laptops here I prefer Libre Office, and have an older (2007) version of MS Office where Publisher is the only part I use. There's an Android port of Libre Office sibling Open Office. It works, but it's fairly large and needs adequate hardware, and some configuration to display decently on a smaller screen. This is mostly turning off the on screen toolbars and adjusting the scaling, as well as making sure it always opens in landscape mode. There's a separate open source app that can enforce screen orientation on a per-app basis that gets the nod for that. For normal use, WPS Office gets the nod. I boot the desktop from SSD, but retained the original HD for data, and things are set up so the SSD is Windows and Linux OSes and applications, with everything else on the HD. I don't store a whole lot locally, and still have nearly half the SSD and a sixth of the original 240GB HD free. TB drives are cheap and getting cheaper, but I simply don't need one. Archival storage is on USB thumbdrives, and there's a seven port USB hub they are plugged into. ______ Dennis |

I will use the SSD for the OS and my most used programs and the HDD for data and bigger programs, mostly games. It's my first computer with an SSD so I'm still figuring out how I want to set it up. But I do want one in my future desktop, but it will have to be a bigger SSD. I'm planning to buy it from a nearby independent store which sells computers they put together themselves. Which means I can change any hardware I want to. Their i7 desktop looks good, but I'll upgrade the graphics card and maybe the SSD. |

Writing birthdays, etc on my 2017 paper calendar.
I use my phone for reminders for other things, but I like having a physical calendar in the kitchen. |

Posting an Amazon review, for soda-can sized flashlight lanterns:
How I saved Christmas, courtesy of these lanterns: I ordered 4 four-packs (of the diffused lanterns; don't see them offered in four pack today), in three different colors, plus a single in the gold or bronze color (for me). 17 lanterns -- one for each member of the extended family, including kids. Three hours after we all opened our gifts, we were ready to start our Big Dinner. The food was out of the ovens, and lined up on the counters in buffet style, and people were gathered. Wham -- the power went out!! (So glad the food was cooked, and even set out already.) Since everybody had a lantern, we pulled out 4 of them (and a 5th for the bathroom) and enjoyed a lovely lantern-lit dinner. With 17 people, we had several long tables end to end. 4 lanterns was perfect to see, in a somewhat candle-lit dinner style. We enjoyed dinner immensely; no extra noise, just a quiet enjoyable family dinner. The minute dinner was over, when we needed to get up and clean up, and serve dessert .... the power came back on! No, nobody was messing with the breakers; power was out for the whole neighborhood. It was a total coincidence (or "a God thing", if you will allow). These lanterns saved the day and the dinner! My family dubbed it "The Day Aunt Debbie Saved Christmas". |
