It's so slow!

Hello all,

Have had the aura one a few days and coming from a Kindle Oasis (which I still have for now) I am on the fence to be honest.

The extra screen size is indeed welcome and coupled with custom firmware I can fit way more text on the screen, so less page turns. It was the primary reason I bought it and the aura one delivers.

Elsewhere though I am not so sure, auto brightness is a mess so I have turned that off, my Oasis of course does not have this feature but my previous kindle did and it worked well. The other issue that is bothering me is how
sluggish this thing is, navigating around the interface is slow and touch screen response is slow with the most regular manifestation of this being page turns where there is a noticeable delay. Now flipping this you could say that it is still quicker than turning the page on a real book (just) but coming from the Oasis it is a little grating.

So as I said I am in 2 minds and the speed at which the kindle changes pages almost makes up for the increased frequency of turning the page. It is just a shame that Kobo did not put a better processor in this thing!

The good news is that most of that is fixable in firmware updates, so hopefully you may find a lot of those issues falling away.

As an aside, are you using epub's or kepubs? Just I'm mostly kepubs here and I'm not seeing too much sluggishness..

Thanks, these are epubs.

Not timed it but I'd say it is around 2 seconds from touching the screen to the next page displaying, accessing other menu items feels slower still and updating font settings takes a good 5 seconds, luckily that is not something I do that often.

Weird. That sounds like either a poorly processed epub or hardware?

I have near instantaneous font conversions and page turns, and i've got about 1000 books on mine.

Do you have Calibre? Try converting the epub to a kepub and see if the conversion fixes it?

Agreed. My Aura One, with kepubs, is infinitesimally slower than my Kindle Voyage page turn, but nowhere near 2 seconds or even 1 second. Something's up with your settings, your book or your device.

Thanks all, converted to kepub in calibre and it is quicker all round. Still slower than my oasis though.

I am a proud owner of KA1 for more then a week now, so i want to share my experience so far. The quality of the body is great, the display is great too. After installing KOReader even PDFs are now comfortable reading format.

Only nightmare is the charger, first time i charged it, it took several hours and the red light kept blinking and the display turned on and off - it seemed like the device thought it had been connected and immediately disconnected from a PC. I unplugged it with 80% charge. The next day, after intensive testing, i had to charge it again. I plugged it to the wall adapter and watched a movie and suddenly a very loud cracking noise happened and burned plastic smell filled the room. The wall charger burned out and kicked out fuses all the way thru two circuit breakers to main house fuses. So i claimed it. Got new one, guess what... it does the blinking again. Now, i am using old phone charger without any problems and with triple charging speed, although it has the same specs.

Cheap, dodgy power bricks are cheap, dodgy.

That seriously sounds like whatever the charger you were using with it originally was bad and you're lucky they replaced the device for you as it wasn't Kobo's fault.
I've had the screen turning on/off thing with a phone charger and I would guess that it is related to it thinking it's connecting/disconnecting but I doubt that had anything to do with the charger shorting out.

Mine did, but it was't from Kobo. I think the seller packed it in as a bonus or something alike, also got a DVD with 7500 ebooks xD

Interesting is that the charger looks exactly the same as those for Samsung smartphones. Except the printed Samsung logo, it is a bit disturbing considering i have two Samsungs at home

In the Czech republic, seller has to replace it as the law dictates - you have 2 yrs warranty on all parts, except batteries. You can also return any bought goods up to 14 days after online purchase, so the seller would risk me cancelling the order.

What makes me a little worried is that the battery seems to go down faster and faster, i am worried if the charger caused a damage to it... might be just my imagination, but i am bit suspicious in these things. How long does your KA1 last? Does KOReader consume battery faster?

Yup. Kobo do not ship wall warts with Aura ONE.

The User's Guide states that a 5V, 500mA micro USB adapter can be used for charging. Chances are, any recent charger made for fast charging phones and tablets is rated much higher, from 1000mA up to around 2500mA. In principle this should not be a problem since it's not what the adapter can provide, it's what the device will draw. If it wants 500mA then it will pull 500mA regardless of how much the adapter is capable of providing.

In practice, cheap, no-name wall warts are junk. The power they deliver generally is not well regulated (choppy, spikey) and they are more likely to short out and cause permanent damage than reputable brands like Amazon and Anker. If you have a genuine Samsung charger then it should be good (I have two and they've exhibited no problems with any of my devices).

Also, it's been demonstrated that USB wall warts can be used to inject malware into devices being charged. I'm not saying that this is the cause of the unexpected data connection pop-ups (my ONE sometimes does the same with my Surface Pro's charger for no apparent reason since it's definitely power only) but it's certainly a possibility.

As for battery life, if you've installed firmware 4.1.x then you should have reasonable battery life. IME, maybe 5% drain while idle over a 24 hour span (that's an off the cuff figure; I haven't measured it). I found that I needed to perform a factory reset before installing 4.1.x. If you're using a sleep cover then you need firmware 4.2.8110.

I've not been here for a while but I bought and set up my new Kobo Aura One
yeaterday having waited weeks to find a store that had one.

There was a dark shadow around the margin area of the screen. Phoned Kobo and they advised a factory reset. This lightened the shadow but it is still there. Phoned Kobo again and was advised that I would be contacted by a higher level...... but I'm still waiting.

Has anyone had or have this problem, I can return the Kobo to the store for a refund but they don't have any more in store.
