Because you have the 5.8.7 firmware for the wrong model Kindle.
OR
The file that you do have is corrupt.

Get a new copy from Amazon, be sure to use the model page of the model you have.
You should be able to get proper (Amazon style) model name from your account page.

After 3 trials, my Kindle has accepted to upgrade to 5.8.7.
All works perfectly, except the SS, it doesn't works anymore.
Marcco what was your wizzard or workflow to reach the 5.8.7 with SS.

Via Kual/MRinstaller

Python, SS, KFX patch. Not sure if I need Python every time, but the workflow works, so I stick to it

One more time - -

Only the requirements to maintain the jail break and the installation of packages is bridged across firmware updates.

Any add-in packaged as an "update_*.bin" pattern filename MUST be re-installed! MUST.

I hope that above translates.

I have to agree. Today, I was given a £10 amazon voucher so after adding it to my account I used it to remove the special offers... So now I have custom screen savers

I really dont get it, it is the only device I've ever owned where I cant change the screensaver (scratch that, none of my nintendo consoles have either) but either way, with this I can now have my own screen savers, well worth the 5 minutes it's taken to set up lol

I love opening the cover on my Kindle and seeing the cover of the book I'm reading, or seeing the cover when I don't close the case and just let it sit there. So much more interesting to see that vs. a pile of pens. LOL

Then I sideloaded it to my Kindle and the cover thumbnail appeared just fine. However, this ScreenSavers Hack doesn't seem to pick up the cover. It is in the correct resolution and filetype (.png) for my PW3.

The file is very big, 300mb, and it looks like someone ran into a similar problem before. Is there no workaround for this? I don't think I can compress it much more.

Your PW3 has twice the ram of earlier models, but still only 512mb (total).

You might try setting up and enabling a swap file.
put it on /var/local not on /mnt/us/ the /mnt/us sub-directory tree is not always available to the kernel (such as when it is exported over USB) but the user's space on /var/local is always there.
Note: You don't need much of a swap file, so leave plenty of free space on /var/local for the firmware to use.

Sorry, I totally forgot about that post.

It looks like I included every command and I don't see anything that needs to be changed.
Give it a shot.

Linux has very sophisticated swap management, even the little bit in that example has a big effect.
