Hello to everyone! (Help!!!!!)

I am hiding out in the US Desert Southwest with my new PRS505 and I need some help. Could somone please explain to me about downloadable file types. I understand PDF and Sony BBoB (whatever that is), Those two are pretty automatic. What I need to know is: Can I download Mobipocket and/or MSReader files and/or software to use with my Sony Reader?

I love this little thing. We live out in the desert, about an hours drive to the nearest book store, in a very small house with minimal room for books, and I read all the time, so this was the perfect solution on all fronts. I have been web shopping since I bought it for some of the titles I want to read, but I really want to besure I download the right format, because I don't like reading on a computer screen. I print long e-mails so I can read them comfortably. Can I download e-mail to the reader?

Thanks for your help in advance, and I look forward to "typing" with you all!

I am not a Sony expert, so here's for the obvious things:

BBoB is BBeb or otherwise known as LRF.

Sony Reader does read PDF, LRF and epub mainly. Those are the formats to go for (sometimes PDF and Epub are indifferently labeled Adobe DE,too)

Formats like .lit or .mobi are NOT directly readable in your Sony reader, but, as long as they are not copy protected, it is pretty obvious to convert those to a Sony format.

Oh, and welcome to MR.

Welcome! I know there's a couple programs here that can convert word documents (like emails) to LRF (Sony's format) pretty easily. Book Designer can do this, and I think there's a few more (all free). Someone else pipe in and say what's easiest.

Check out our free ebooks here! If you go to the top of the page, click "ebooks" then Sony BBeB. Any of those can go on your Reader (very easy, save the file and click File then Import File on the Sony Library taskbar).

I love my 505 too What do you like to read?

I downloaded Calibre last week and just got my 505 today. I converted a few files to LRF so far and it seems to be working out nicely for me. I am by no means a tech geek.. I figure stuff out usually by trial & error. I am finding Calibre easy to use at this point!

The only format with DRM that you can read directly on your 505 is the Sony .LRX which is, I believe, only available from Sony.

A format that is acceptable for the PRS-500 is Rich Text Format (RTF) which can be output from MS Word. I assume it is also acceptable to the 505 as well. The problems are that Sony's implementation of RTF will not show images or TOC.

You can buy LRF ebooks from several places, e.g. Baen & Fictionwise (multiformat books).

Thank you all for your quick responses and suggestions. Here are my results so far. I downloaded BD and that is way too complicated for me. I can deal with the electronics of computers all day long, but when it comes to some applications I am a bit challenged. I'm a point and click kind of girl. Now I downloaded Calibre and it seems very do-able, even for me. Here is the new problem. I am trying to convert from PRC to LRF (both of which are Greek to me) and Calibre says I have to remove the DRM ???????????????.

Next time I will know what I am doing when I download a book, I just got a little ahead of myself.

Thanks again for holding my hand. That is as soon as I put my Reader down!
