When you mention firmware upgrades, I skip them completely.
I use KSM8 and koreader and this is all I need. Whatever firmware there is, it isn't important to me as long as I have working KSM and koreader. |

I don't remember the last time I use the nickel reader. I use every time KSM-Koreader and play pbchess.

Hi guys, I have a question:
Previously I had a version of KSM on my kobo mini, and when you enabled USB support, you had access to the entire filesystem (from /). On my Glo HD, this is not the case. How can I make it so I have access to root again? can't find it in any settings, and the only 'related' post I saw was https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showpost.php?p=3195812 , which is still a bit annoing to use. |

Amazing stuff guys. Got Kobo Aura One and KOReader reading for PDFs is great!
Bookerly, Manual Crop, nicely read 80 character text files, what else could you want?! Had a little trouble with starting nickel from KSM, KSM threw me back home, what solved it seems: 1. Second boot Nickel 2. Turn off WiFi there 3. Second boot KSM 4. start Nickel 5. Re-enable and connect WiFi in Nickel - Switching back and forth nickel works, can't recreate problem anymore. - Yes, WiFi was off in KSM. So if anyone has such weird hiccup, that's what I did. FW Version: 4.2.8110 (4f749ed9be, 12/12/16) |

Hello guys, i have bought KA1 few days back and, although i have never had any ereader, it is pretty amazing. Yes, it is a bit slow, but with all the features it has, surprisingly even animations work... a bit, i like it. Problems started with PDFs, which was the main reason why i bought it - i hate printing hundreds of pages of study materials, just to throw them away after exam, but to the problem...
There are 2 things that bother me:¨ 1. the daylight... i have searched for it and it seems there is no workaround yet, to make it working with KSM/KOReader - i had to disable it, coz it never turned itself off, so even with frontlight disabled, it still illuminated the screen. is there any plugin/hack to make it adjustable? [s]2. WIFI (Fun fact: did you know that this abbreviation has no meaning?)... Since installing KSM, i am unable to use WIFI, it just doesn't find any access points. It worked before normally, i was connected to my local network all the time. I proceeded according to the guide so: 1) copy KSM zip to .kobo 2) unplug and let it update 3) copy KSM KA1 update zip to .kobo 4) again let it update... 5) then i messed around with it to make the menu text bigger, set the KSM to launch every time and everything seemed to work, except daylight, but when I try to use WIFI, it never connected or found any APs (i mean WIFI in Nickel doesn't work; I got confused a bit by the WIFI menu in KSM, so i left it untouched to not brick my device and not even tried it there) @hincor so, WIFI does work for you? May i ask you how did you proceeded with flashing KSM into the device?[/s] EDIT: Second problem solved after flashing the KA1 patch again, something went probably wrong the first time. @Ken Maltby: Thx, for the advice ![]() Last edited by Zekathon; 12-24-2016 at 05:43 PM. The WiFi should work in all three, KSM8, Nickel, and KOReader. They always worked together on my AuraHD. KOReader now performs a scan to detect APs, as part of its WiFi startup. What version number are you using? You can find the latest here.

usb enable not working on Kobo Aura ...
FWIW.
I had with my Kobo Aura (the original one, NOT Ed 2, ONE, H2O) the same problem as 'ttrek' was facing in post 260 of this thread : after attempting to enable usb in KSM8,
On the other hand, I was able to get usbnet working so I could access the device in that way. Next, I installed tshering's usb_test.zip and ran "usb enable test.sh" but that lead to the same problem. After this, I ran usb_enable_test.sh from kbterminal.sh, which produced some sensible output. In the saved output (with usbnet, file /adds/kbmenu/kbterminal/output<timestamp>.txt) I found : <...> + echo 3 + umount -l /mnt/onboard + umount -l /mnt/sd umount: can't forcibly umount /mnt/sd: Invalid argument + /sbin/insmod /drivers/mx50-ntx/usb/gadget/arcotg_udc.ko + sleep 2 + /sbin/insmod /drivers/mx50-ntx/usb/gadget/g_file_storage.ko file=/dev/mmcblk0p3,/dev/mmcblk1p1 stall=1 removable=1 vendor=0x2237 product=0x4163 vendor_id=Kobo product_id=eReader-0.0.0 SN=N000000000000 insmod: can't insert '/drivers/mx50-ntx/usb/gadget/g_file_storage.ko': No such device or address + sleep 1 Clearly there was a problem with unmounting the extra SD card of the Kobo Aura. No surprise there ... as there was no SD card in the slot. When looking in the script usb_enable_test.sh, I saw : if [ -e /dev/mmcblk1p1 ]; then LUNS=/dev/mmcblk0p3,/dev/mmcblk1p1 The existence of the device is tested, but not if there is something mounted or not. With no SD card present, the chosen option gives an error when inserting the g_file_storage.ko module. And that gives the above mentioned problems. Once an SD card was inserted in the slot, enabling USB is no longer a problem. Now I can change the runmenu setting to 'always'. ![]() Merry Christmas everybody ! Cheers, Ben |

Hello!
I haven't read the whole thread, nor did I try KSM8 yet. I'm interested in the fmon and kbmenupngs feature. Do I need to install the whole KSM8 or is it possible to just install fmon? Do I have to modify anything (in the script), or just "load and use"? My "plan" is to add extra features by adding images as menu items, put them in a collection, so they are more easy to access. I don't want to use the "classic" KSM menu, it would be more convenient to use a menu from the stock GUI. I successfuly edited the title (and author) of the images in the Kobo database, so it's not neccessary to use the original filenames as it does by default. This could be automated with some sql script, but could be dangerous tho... So which one to chose? KSM, as far as I read, has a more easy to manage solution for running scripts by opening pictures in nickel, but I don't want to change my sleeping and power off screens, and any other stuff. I don't need the koreader, coolreader, pbchess. What I would need is a "notepad", or an editor or something for creating notes and lists, "todo" style maybe, perhaps a calculator, and a calendar would be cool. I'm planning to write some own apps maybe in QT, but i need to do way more research for doing so. Last edited by kido.resuri; 12-28-2016 at 02:40 PM. |

I'm not sure if this is because of KSM, or FMON, but every time i go into nickel and try to open the library, it goes back to KSM after showing the library for about half a second.

CH23 yes, I guess you didn't follow the installation procedure. Open the kbmenupngs BEFORE you copy the KoboRoot file, or else this will happen.
Spoiler:
Edit: Never mind, I found out, that KSM must start to make the menupngs work. Last edited by kido.resuri; 01-01-2017 at 05:41 AM. Reason: Found the reason |

then installed KSM 08, and koreader (in .adds). i set KSM to start each time, and from there, when i go to nickel, the images do the following: toggle_nightmode.png -> nothing switchtokoreader.png -> KSM simulate_usb_connection.png -> 'computer connected' popup pop ups for a second poweroff.png -> powers off exit_nickel.png -> exits nickel |

Thats normal behavior i guess. You have to install nightmode seperately, as well as koreader, to make those icons work.

The "simulate_usb_connection.png" is to have Nickel rescan for new media. The Poweroff should be for the KSM poweroff, instead of the Nickel one. Luck; Ken Last edited by Ken Maltby; 01-02-2017 at 04:26 PM. |
