Bargain @ $4.99 CAD for 3-book omnibus today only (Dec 23rd) @ Kobo Canada as the part of their holiday week deals (non-couponable from Random House's Vintage Canada imprint, matched at only some of the other Canadian stores):

Harry Hole Mysteries 3-Book Bundle: The Snowman, The Leopard, Phantom by award-winning Norwegian author Jo Nesbø (SYKM, Wikipedia), comprising #7-9 in his popular Harry Hole series. #1 & #10 are still on sale from some HarperCollins imprint for $3.99 CAD each.

These come after the completion of a particular story-arc and start a new one which begins a series of character development changes, and are IMHO a decent jumping-on point for getting into the series. I'll warn you that these are also on the somewhat graphically gory side for Nordic noir crime thrillers, though not particularly tending towards the extreme.

With more than seven million copies sold worldwide, and translated into over forty languages, Jo Nesbo’s Harry Hole series is an international phenomenon. Detective Harry Hole is a genuine anti-hero: a handsome loner, an alcoholic and workaholic who is tormented in his personal life even as he is revered by his colleagues for his unwavering sense of justice and proven police instincts. Harry’s self-governing, anti-authoritarian style has driven his superior officer at the crime squad in Oslo to call him “the best investigator in the department and the worst public servant.” First-class thrillers with high voltage suspense and complex plotting, The Snowman, The Leopard and Phantom are fascinating journeys into the world of this singular character and the dark criminal minds he pursues to the very limits of his sanity, in Oslo and beyond.

Several titles by Dorothy L. Sayers are $1.99 at Kindle US (many repeats). Not sure why or how long - I looked in my email for some deal from Open Road, but didn't see one. Still, Open Road price drops don't usually last too long, so I'd pick up any of these pretty quickly if you want them.

link for the seven: https://www.amazon.com/gp/search/?se...keyword=-whose

Titles are:
  • Gaudy Night
  • Busman's Honeymoon
  • Nine Tailors
  • Striding Folly
  • In the Teeth of the Evidence
  • Hangman's Holiday
  • Murder Must Advertise

Two more most-recent-in-series titles at good prices as part of today's US Kindle Daily Deal.

The Shattered Tree is the most recent (2016) in the Bess Crawford series by Charles Todd. It is $2.99 today.

Spoiler:
Quote:
World War I battlefield nurse Bess Crawford goes to dangerous lengths to investigate a wounded soldier’s background—and uncover his true loyalties—in this thrilling and atmospheric entry in the bestselling “vivid period mystery series” (New York Times Book Review).

At the foot of a tree shattered by shelling and gunfire, stretcher-bearers find an exhausted officer, shivering with cold and a loss of blood from several wounds. The soldier is brought to battlefield nurse Bess Crawford’s aid station, where she stabilizes him and treats his injuries before he is sent to a rear hospital. The odd thing is, the officer isn’t British—he’s French. But in a moment of anger and stress, he shouts at Bess in German.

When Bess reports the incident to Matron, her superior offers a ready explanation. The soldier is from Alsace-Lorraine, a province in the west where the tenuous border between France and Germany has continually shifted through history, most recently in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, won by the Germans. But is the wounded man Alsatian? And if he is, on which side of the war do his sympathies really lie?

Of course, Matron could be right, but Bess remains uneasy—and unconvinced. If he was a French soldier, what was he doing so far from his own lines . . . and so close to where the Germans are putting up a fierce, last-ditch fight?

When the French officer disappears in Paris, it’s up to Bess—a soldier’s daughter as well as a nurse—to find out why, even at the risk of her own life.

The Wrong Side of Goodbye is the most recent (also 2016) in the Harry Bosch series by Michael Connelly. It is $4.99 today, a bit pricey by my standards, but it is a most recent title, and my price sensitivity is mostly for backlist...

Notable Book of 2016 --Washington Post
10 Best Mysteries of 2016 -- Adam Woog, Seattle Times

Detective Harry Bosch must track down someone who may never have existed in the new thriller from #1 New York Times bestselling author Michael Connelly.

Harry Bosch is California's newest private investigator. He doesn't advertise, he doesn't have an office, and he's picky about who he works for, but it doesn't matter. His chops from thirty years with the LAPD speak for themselves.

Soon one of Southern California's biggest moguls comes calling. The reclusive billionaire is nearing the end of his life and is haunted by one regret. When he was young, he had a relationship with a Mexican girl, his great love. But soon after becoming pregnant, she disappeared. Did she have the baby? And if so, what happened to it?

Desperate to know whether he has an heir, the dying magnate hires Bosch, the only person he can trust. With such a vast fortune at stake, Harry realizes that his mission could be risky not only for himself but for the one he's seeking. But as he begins to uncover the haunting story--and finds uncanny links to his own past--he knows he cannot rest until he finds the truth.

At the same time, unable to leave cop work behind completely, he volunteers as an investigator for a tiny cash-strapped police department and finds himself tracking a serial rapist who is one of the most baffling and dangerous foes he has ever faced.

Swift, unpredictable, and thrilling, The Wrong Side of Goodbye shows that Michael Connelly "continues to amaze with his consistent skill and sizzle" (Cleveland Plain Dealer).

Free on Amazon UK - Suburban Death (DCI Sheldon Hunter Mystery Book 2) by Meg Elizabeth Atkins

Spoiler:
The suburban area of Bankhill is a seemingly quiet, affluent area…

Yet Detective Chief Inspector Sheldon Hunter finds his perceptions of this tamed arcadia dramatically changed as he is drawn into the secrecy and deception surrounding the prominent Mannering family.

Floy Mannering is wealthy and charming, a survivor of a forgotten age, in her perfect Jacobean house, Fairmead.

She is being temporarily cared for by Daisy, the daughter of her best friend. But Daisy’s devotion to Floy and the need to protect her from the claims of the appalling Skinner family lead to desperate measures.

Soon, a shocking murder sparks more manipulation, suspicion and danger and in his persistent search for the perpetrator, DCI Hunter finds himself grudgingly sorting through his developing allegiances.

Who exactly can he trust?

Before long, he realises that he has been deceived himself, his vision blurred by his personal involvement.

After everything, has DCI Hunter been sent in every direction but the correct one?

Only time will tell, but time is one luxury he does not have …

Free on Amazon UK - The Killings on Kersivay by Angus MacVicar

Spoiler:
A killer is among them…

Peter Parsons grew up on the island of Kersivay, and years later, he returns a troubled man.

Even as he flies over the Scottish Highlands heading northwards, his old lover Myra and his fractured childhood both linger on his mind.

But the past is past, and Peter has a job to do.

A prison for the mentally insane has been built and as a producer for BBC Radio, it’s his new assignment to get local reactions to the prison for a programme.

He meets with his old pal, Napoleon ‘Nappy’ Neil, who works at the local hotel owned by Willie Ross – better known by his nickname the King of Kersivay.

It appears that nothing has changed on Kersivay. That is until a prison inmate, Terry Jackson escapes.

And then, a local girl, Joanna Campbell goes missing. Hours later, her body found.

It shouldn’t worry Peter that much, but he’s been suffering blackouts from migraines. Last time, he woke up with someone’s blood on his hands.

And on that foggy night, he had another one. All he can remember is a woman’s scream and her last words.

It’s easy enough to blame Jackson, but could Peter have done something to poor Joanna?

As luck would have it, when he’s found by Major Rivington-Keel – the new laird of the Parson’s estate, his story of being on a morning walk is taken as truth.

The only one suspicious is Kenneth Harringay, the famous fisherman-poet.

As the search for Jackson intensifies, Peter learns that Joanna had a boyfriend and went to meet him on the night he died.

However, it becomes increasingly clear the inmate couldn’t have escaped on his own…

Could it have been Joanna’s boyfriend?

And, more importantly, if he did, who killed her?

As more deaths occur, it becomes a race against time for the rest of the islanders.

If only to prove his own innocence to himself, Peter will get to the bottom of the killings on Kersivay…

Free on Amazon UK - The Sound of Murder by John Bonett

Spoiler:
When Sid and Minnie hear a loud noise from the back of their van, they think it’s the engine stalling. Hours later, Sid discovers a corpse…

The body is of Halberd Corsair, one of London’s finest tycoons and entrepreneurs, whose home and work is the grand Termini building.

The official report suggests it was an accident – that he slipped and fell out the window.

But gossip is rife and rumours spread that Mrs. Corsair might have done him – it was an unhappy marriage and she profited handsomely from her husband’s death.

Not only that, but her opera glasses are found broken outside, just below the ill-fated window.

As her health declines over these vile slanders, her nephew and heir to Corsair’s ‘empire’, Keith Antrim, enlists Sir Otto’s help to clear her name.

And so, Inspector Borges is brought in. Alongside Sir Otto’s niece, the headstrong Anthea, the pair realise that Corsair’s death might not have an accident after all.

It seems on the night his ‘accident’, someone was in the Corsair’s home.

However, as Inspector Borges discovers, there are several people with the means and the motive to kill.

Could it have been Colonel Summersby, whom was denied an immediate loan that he desperately needed from Corsair to pay off his gambling debts?

Or the Colonel’s controlling and cold wife, Claire, who, as always, might’ve took her husband’s problems into her own hands?

Maybe it was Julian Killigrew whose unprofitable literary magazine was going to be shut down by Corsair?

Or even Keith Antrim himself – who stood to gain his uncle’s business, standing and naturally, the profits?

And then, it appears that Mr Corsair might have had a mistress…

As the list of suspects grows, it’s up to Borges and Anthea to track down the killer before it’s too late.

The Crime at the 'Noah's Ark': A Golden Age Mystery by Molly Thynne

Spoiler:
“There’ll be blue murder here before Christmas!”

A number of parties heading for a luxurious holiday spot, are forced by severe winter weather to put up at the ‘Noah’s Ark’, a hostelry they will share with Dr. Constantine, a shrewd chess master and keen observer of all around him. Other guests include bestselling novelist Angus Stuart, the aristocratic Romsey family, a pair of old spinster sisters, and a galloping major whose horseplay gets him into hot water – and then gets him murdered.

Who is the masked intruder who causes such a commotion on the first night? Who has stolen Mrs van Dolen’s emeralds, and who has slashed everyone’s (almost everyone’s) car tyres? And are the murderer and thief one and the same, or are the guests faced with two desperate criminals hiding in plain sight in the snowbound inn? Dr. Constantine, aided by two of the younger guests, is compelled to investigate this sparkling Christmas mystery before anyone else ends up singing in the heavenly choir …

The Blind Side: An Ernest Lamb Mystery by Patricia Wentworth

Spoiler:
“Anybody could have told you what Ross was like.”

“They did tell me,” said Mavis tearfully. “That’s why I did it.”

Ross Craddock was just the type to be murdered. The new landlord of Craddock house, he begins by giving eviction notice to his aunt Lucy. He threatens the doorman with dismissal. He makes a violent and unwelcome pass to his cousin Mavis. He is vindictive and spiteful and ends up dead. The suspects include Lee who may have walked in her sleep and killed him out of unconscious fear. Or Peter who may have found Ross’ advances to Mavis unbearable. Or aunt Lucy who unexpectedly came back. Or possibly Bobby who was still in love with Mavis and furious that she was seen with Ross. The answer will be yet another Wentworth twist.

Quote:
Private detective Kinsey Millhone feels a bit out of place in Nordstrom’s lingerie department, but she’s entirely in her element when she puts a stop to a brazen shoplifting spree. For her trouble she nearly gets run over in the parking lot by one of the fleeing thieves—and later learns that the one who didn’t get away has been found dead in an apparent suicide. But Audrey Vance’s grieving fiancé suspects murder and hires Kinsey to investigate—in a case that will reveal a big story behind a small crime, and lead her into a web that connects a shadowy “private banker,” an angry trophy wife, a spoiled kid with a spiraling addiction, and a brutal killer without a conscience…

East of A is the first of two titles in the Payton Sherwood series by Russell Atwood. It is a repeat (but from 2012, quite a while ago) freebie right now at Kindle US. Per the blurb, it also includes the short story, East Village Noir, which is currently $0.99 on its own at Kindle US.

New 2011 ebook editon contains BONUS mystery story: "East Village Noir"

Private eye Payton Sherwood, returning late one night to his East Village office after an upstate case, runs into trouble in the form of three bull-necked heavies and a tough 16-year-old runaway named Glory. After taking a beating and losing his gold wristwatch, Payton is left bleeding on the sidewalk.

Tracking after Glory and his stolen watch, Payton winds his way through Alphabet City--in and out of trendy after-hours dives, across vacant lots and occupied squats and into barrio tenements. Here the shadows that frighten aren't those that shade the street but rather the soul. Payton's dusk-to-dawn nightmare on the wide side is about to begin--and nothng will stop it but death...

"Place descritons are clearly, even beautifully focused, and his tawdry locales are inhabited by characters who are not only fascinating to study but real enought to look back at you."
--The New York Times Book Review

"An impressive debut. Russell Atwood takes the rusty private eye novel and oils it and gives it new charm and a fresh look."
--Michael Connelly, bestselling author of THE BRASS VERDICT.

"EAST OF A establishes a new category of suspense fiction: downtown noir. Atwood definitely has his finger on the pulse of the city that never sleeps."
--Jeffery Deaver, bestselling author of ROADSIDE CROSSES.
