Lost them in a house fire need to replace
I have 2 nook st glowlights, 2 Icarus T61's and the mini kobo. All but 1 Nook was in my bedroom 2 nights ago when I had a fire. Everything electrical apparently has to be written off due to the smoke. FWIW it was a recalled little heater, of course had no idea it had been recalled and will be spending the next 2 months living downstairs in my small house.
So I thought I'd look at one replacement hopefully reduced in the sales. Needs to have: An SD slot Epubs Page turn buttons Light Ideally 300ppi I was thinking the T63 which also has 300ppi. Only problem is I need to get it from bang good. Any other suggestions? Thanks PS the reason for so many one I only recently got the Icarus when they were selling the refurbs cheap. So I was going to get rid of a couple I just hadn't got round to it. The Kobo was for reading on the tube. |

Two that fit all your needs and are available from Amazon (via resellers) are the Icarus Illumina ($120) and the Inkbook Obsidian (Currently unavailable. It comes and goes). I believe these are both the same device, just rebranded. I haven't ever seen either, so I can't personally endorse them. If you could lose the 300ppi and page turn buttons, you could buy a Kobo Aura off of eBay for $50. If you want new, there's the Aura Edition 2. In my opinion, there isn't any improvement from the Aura to the Aura 2 and you lost the SD card slot, so I'd recommend spending half the dough for a better device. |

Thanks, I'm in the UK and it looks like the Obsidian is hard to get here too. Amazon has the prime which I think is similar and 212ppi for £120. But I could also get the Energy Sistem for that.
I'm wary of icarus because the one's I had played up. Putting on the Boyue software sorted it but it was a pain and time consuming to sort. Page turn buttons are a must. |

I have the Energy Sistem Pro HD. It is only 212dpi, but with some adjustment of refresh rates, font and font weight using AlReader in e-ink mode it makes a very good reader. With AlReader, the page turns buttons work perfectly.
The InkBook Prime is the replacement for the Obsidian, but it is still only 212dpi. It has a noticeably smaller battery than the Obsidian, but InkBook told me that their new page refresh technology means it has the same battery life (apparently). (InkBooks do not come with Play Store installed - they have their own branded store). For a 300dpi with buttons, there is the new Kepler, but it is not cheap and, from a couple of reviews I have seen, the page turn buttons are not the easiest to use. CyBook's new Muse HD is a 300dpi reader with page turn buttons at a very decent price (it is unclear whether it has an English language dictionary). |

And, of course, the Pocket Book Touch HD. (300 dpi, + page turn buttons).

I remember when I went from the Sony 500 to the 505, the page turn speed changed so much that it took me awhile to get used to reading a little further before I hit that page turn button. But I did get used to it. If the Pocketbook meets all your other needs, in my opinion it's still worth getting one, even if they're a little slower than, say the Amazon Paperwhite. P.S. So sorry to hear about your house fire! Last edited by FizzyWater; 12-23-2016 at 05:11 PM. |

Thanks, there's some really good suggestions there. I thought the Kepler didn't have buttons so I'll look at it again.
My bedroom is black. Apparently the soot is acidic and dangerous as it gets in the devices and poses a danger later, so all electrical items are replaced. I've wiped down my main icarus over 20 times now and it still stinks and it's playing up. I've been told not to recharge it. I've got a few things in the second bedroom boxed so I'm hoping they'll be ok as the smoke damage is dark grey not black. Thanks Fizzywater, people keep saying how calm I am but when I opened the door to thick smoke and flames I feel we (me and my dog) got off lightly. Could have easily lost my home and possibly worse. Insurance company seems to be coming good. It was caused by a little heater that was subject to a voluntary recall which I had no idea about, it had been implicated then in 46 fires. |

Have a look at the Tolino brand sold by Deutsche Telekom.
http://mytolino.uk/tolino-vision-4hd/ebook-reader/ Runs on Android and can be rooted. At least previous models could be rooted last time I looked. Check before you buy, if you are interested in installing your own apps. Seems like the newest model doesn't have an SD card, but seems to have 8GB storage and is waterproof (and so smoke-proof as well). It also has a flush screen like Paperwhite has. I have a Tolino Vision 3 HD - a really good 300dpi screen, but no page turn buttons and no sd card. Collections can now be partially managed via Calibre. As for rooting, I tried the well publicised method and ran in to the same problem some others have experienced - only succeeding with it if system language is kept set to German.

How does it behave? Do you have to have Deutsch as a system language even after installing the third-party readers? I do not want to have a rooted reader, I am just interested in installing a launcher and a few e-book readers, such as AlReader. |

The other thing about Tap to Flip - it only allows forward progress. Going back a page requires touching the screen. As for the root - the problem I could not get beyond is that one must install a launcher (the root method online comes with a version of Smart Launcher), but whether using that launcher or any other I side loaded, the system would error unless I had system language set as German. I gave up with the root, and just accepted using the Tolino software, which is basic but reliable. Last edited by church mouse; 12-26-2016 at 07:11 AM. |

A Boyue would fit your needs. Why not use banggood?

Bang good means I could be stung by customs. I'd rather know what I'm paying or ideally pay it upfront so you don't get stung by Royal mails admin costs which was £8 about 5 years ago. I might just have to bite the bullet and hope for the best.
I looked at the Tolino, usable space is about 1.9gb apparently according to an Amazon review. |
