Found this old thread when looking for a way to properly display pop-up footnotes in kepubs. Unfortunately it does not work with Pali accents (used a lot in footnotes in books on Buddhism). I have attached the test epub from fxp3 with a line added for Pali accents.
Does anyone know of a workaround (maybe replacing the Georgia font used in pop-ups with a proper unicode font?) Last edited by ams; 12-23-2016 at 07:22 AM. Reason: file attached |

If it is, some of the UI will use alternate fonts if they are loaded. For example, if the title needs a different font, if you open a book that uses that font, the title will be displayed correctly. I don't know if this is the case for the footnote popup or not. And, can't test this as I don't have a suitable font. |

Yes, the problem is the squares for some of the characters (ṇ ṭ ṅ ḷ ṁ ṣ ṃ ḍ). None of the standard included fonts can display these characters. I have unicode fonts like DejaVu and Linux Libertine in my fonts directory but this only works for reading the book, not for the pop-up footnotes. Actually the Kobo has the same problem with the title in the library view, showing squares if it contains one of these characters.

The popup does showed unformatted text. It strips markup such as bold and italics, so it might not show non-standard characters. But, maybe one of the people here who use the non-supplied fonts will have an idea. |

@ams
This is how it looks on my device (with the conflicting internal fonts deleted). The font is selected automatically, I guess, in this case it is Gandhari Unicode. Apart from the uppercase long a it seems somehow ok to me. Last edited by tshering; 01-03-2017 at 12:41 PM. |

Thanks a lot tshering. Followed the procedure in the other thread you linked (deleting conflicting system fonts) and it works perfectly on my Mini. All characters are displayed correctly now, not only in the footnotes but also in the ToC, Library view and dictionary drop-down menu where I used to see just squares.

hallo,
I just tried this and it works nicely, but a couple of questions. This method doesn't use the official epub 3.0 footnote specification. Is there a particular reason why NOT to use the official xml footnote entity?? What are the differences? The second problemo is that the pop up footnote kills all html/css formating and displays text as a 'run on' sentence!! In order to force some sort of formatting I even tried an svg image with text embedded and here ignores the formatting as well!! The formatting that I am trying to show isn't really difficult, it's a list, is it really impossible to show a list in the footnotes? I've noticed that after a certain amount of words it creates another line. As a workaround I was planning to use nbsp in order to force it to display the way I want it. thanks very much. |

For links without the epub 3 specs, it uses other rules to achieve something close. There are other threads discussing this. The latest was from October when something changed. Quote:
