Once I realized what DeDRM stands for that made sense. I'll watch out for updates, thank you!

Same for me especially with automated jobs via command line tools if an automation do not expects error logs form DeDRM code as output.

Getting more than 100 in Flesch–Kincaid score

Hi Everyone,

I was really excited when I read about this add-on. So much that I re-downloaded Calibre to my PC.

But it has caused me some trouble and it just doesn´t seem to work.

Charles Bukowski breaks the Flesh-Kincaid scale with a score on 105 for his novel Women, and Murakami´s Wind-up Bird Chronicle gets a score on 93, which despite the fact that he is in the easy reading league also sounds quite high.

Can anyone help?

Kind Regards,
Peter

Can you quantify why you think it isn't working correctly? Are you comparing against the FK scores for the same books calculated using different software?

Because the Flesh-Kincaid link from the first post of this thread explains that higher numbers are easier to read.

So those are both in the Very easy to read. Easily understood by an average 11-year-old student category--or easier.

Hi Jimmy, thanks for answer. There are three reasons, why I think it's wrong.

1) First of all The Flesch-Kincaid scale only goes up to 100.

2) When I put "Women" into "https://readability-score.com/text/" I get the score 91.2 and "Wind Up Bird Chronicle gets 82.

3) There are no decimals in both of the outcome scores.

According to the Wikipedia page linked:
Quote:
The highest (easiest) readability score possible is around 120
Which seems reasonable as they 100 is the 11 year-old level, so a higher number would be needed for younger ages.
Quote:
2) When I put "Women" into "https://readability-score.com/text/" I get the score 91.2 and "Wind Up Bird Chronicle gets 82.
The calculation used is:
Code:
score = 206.835 - (1.015 * (text_analysis['averageWordsPerSentence'])) - (84.6 * (text_analysis['syllableCount']/ text_analysis['wordCount']))
There is a long discussion in this thread from earlier in the on the word count. The issue is what exactly is a word and what delimeters should be used. I was considering updating the algorithm used for this to use one used elsewhere in calibre, but, never got around to it. And when you did the test on the site, did you include all the book? That is including the cover, contents and any other front and back matter? There is no way for the plugin to distinguish these, so they will be included in the counts.

I have never looked at how the syllable count is done. I don't know how accurate it is.

Decimals are shown in the results here. Are you using a floating point column to store the results?

1) While the given example scale lists 0-100, the calculation is not inherently limited. The wikipedia page also refers to large negative numbers.

2) I don't know the details about the FK implementation in CP specifically, but I would be well willing to believe the differences are due to differences in ebook->text conversion or word/syllable counting used.

Considering the fact that word counts and page counts can vary by source and processing, it's not really a surprise FK score will vary some.

3) According to the images you first posted, your custom column is type integer, not float.

Hi Jimmy and David.

Thanks again for your answers.

I have now tried to compare some other books and with some other tools.

For instance...

With the plugin Jean-Paul-Sarte's Nausea gives me 90 in FK Readability Score as an Epub file (with deleted cover and index) and 87 if I convert the file into txt-format.

When I use http://flesh.sourceforge.net I get the score 76.6.

When I use https://www.online-utility.org/engli...nd_improve.jsp I get the score 73.06

When I use http://www.checktext.org I get the score 74.6

The plugin does seem to rank books that is hard to read lower on the scale. I think this example with Saatre and the examples from yesterday with Murakami and Bukowski proves that. Plus when I put in Gunter Grass' The Tin Drum I got 60 and that book has some extremely long sentences.

But it seems to measure the Flesch-Kincaid readability too high compared to other tools.

Changing the column to floating did help the decimal issue. Thanks!

Hello all,

I wanted to know if it is possible to show directly on the Kindle (I own a PW3) the pages count and the Gunning fog ? I do have these informations on Calibre but I wanted to have them available on my Kindle too.

I suspect that inserting a customized 'Jacket' would get the job done.
How are you HTML skills. You copy the templates from the programs folder, make your tweaks to that and place it in the same RELATIVE location in the Calibre configuration folder.
Calibre uses any matching item found there as an override. This location is also safe from normal Calibre updates. You may need to make adjustments over time as Calibre evolves

I cheat and include other info in the title using metadata plugboards. See attached.
