No Amazon will not know if you sideload a book via your computer.

Leave the wifi off and no one can see anything. Who would leak the data? If you are really worried about it, leave the wifi off and transfer everything via the computer. Last edited by Cinisajoy; 12-19-2016 at 10:01 PM. |

By leaking I meant — could the Kindle itself leak data about the content I have? If I'm browsing or buying on the Kindle store, if I'm updating the firmware, or just online, can anyone have access to my content somehow? |

For what it's worth I side-load a lot of books on my Kindle. I keep Wifi on and Whispersync on. I also make safe backups of the books I buy from Amazon and either side-load them or email them to my Kindle through Amazon so I don't have to worry about maximum copies. I have several Kindles.

I have no idea if Amazon knows what I'm doing. I do know they don't care. They may have a record of it all but I don't care. At one point I was concerned that they might care about me emailing books to my Kindle that I'd bought from other stores and converted to mobi so Amazon can send them back to my Kindle. I live in a rural area without a car so I depend on Amazon and I don't want to hurt my relationship with them. I called and talked to a support guy about what I was doing, specifically in this case about sending books through their system for my Kindle when I'd bought them elsewhere. The guy asked around and called me back the next day and said no-one there saw any problem with it and a number of people at Amazon do that, as well. A few months later something made me worry about it again, probably something I'd read, so I called them and got pretty similar information. So Amazon thinks this is okay. I think it's okay. I decided not to worry about it. Barry |

i can tell you one thing they don't record: [ & this suggests they do not rtrack what is read on the device either]

We have mislaid our kindle ( e-ink) and in desperation I phoned amazon, after ransacking the house for an hour. I'd gone to my apps and devices -> devices and it was not listed so I was sure it had been lost/stolen and deregistered. [ turns out you have to check a different devices screen - that one is only for devices that use the app store - so it is still registered to me] So, having established that it was not stolen , I asked it they could tell me when it was last on-line - to help us track where it may have been last used, and the lady said they do not store that info, for customer privacy reasons. she did helpfully deactivate it ( and explained the difference between de-register and de-activate). if we find it, and contact them again. they will re-activate it, but no one else can register it to a different account. and she gave me the S/N[ which actually is on the device screens if you go content and devices -> books -> devices ] though I thin the Square Trade insurance does not cover forgetfulness ! i blame the wife

I set one but only for the kindle store, to remove the risk of accidentally buying the matching audio book. It has the side effect of locking other screens though like registration details.

I would never shop for, books via a tiny grey screen, I would use pc or tablet |

Well I think we can eliminate the first two because those two groups wouldn't be asking on a public forum. The last one is easy. Buy you a prepaid credit card and open your own account at Amazon. Borrow a friend's computer to send all the books to and change the titles. Just make sure the friend likes the same type of books. And don't let anyone know you have an Amazon account. |

I don't care whether my mom or my kids browse my books either, but I'd be concerned if someone I don't even know could do the same remotely and without my knowledge — it's a matter of principle, even if all they could find were classic fairy tales. All I want is to make my Kindle as private as possible, and since my experience with the tool is lacking, I'm taking the step of asking a community of very knowledgeable and ingenious people, because reading the manuals and searching around haven't been enough so far. |
