RBRapha: Put the kindle_update_tool to a Linux system and run it from there. Mind that you need to have quite some Linux skills to make it happen to 3.4.2, otherwise you will brick your Kindle.

yeah my friend ended up helping me out, he has a lot more dev experience than me and we ended up using a slightly different route if it helps future people

basically just patching the update files and using busybox to stop it from trying to update fb.modes copying out fb.modes and patching it locally and then running a seperate update just for fb.modes because i was having the memory issue and usbnet didn't work at all for me.

my friend got the idea from a chinese blog he found. it touted to have pre patched update files which would have made it a lot easier but the files were DOA :/ so we had to reverse engineer how this guy did it through google translate lol

also can't get it to recognise active content like KUAL but that's a hurdle for another day

My DXG is on 3.3 version and it eat up battery as cotton candy in the rain! In my experience, it keeps trying to download some books and it can't because of lack of TLS, but it keeps trying. My battery wasn't lasting 48 hours! It has also some HTM file with zero size kb.

Maybe its just a faulty battery, try to replace it.

kindle_update_tool.py has to be in $PATH, or you have to run it as ./kindle_update_tool.py in the directory you have it.

I'm now running it from a Ubuntu Terminal prompt. I stopped trying the update process from a while because of Xmas things, I will go back to it next week.

It stopped drainning as soon as I turned off 3G. It was trying to download a book ("The Idiot", by Dostoyevsky, and the idiot was me for trying to download it). Now anytime I turn on the 3G, it keeps trying to DL the book and drain the battery very quick. If I turn off 3G, battery lasts weeks.

I will try it again after Xmas. Thanks for your help!

By the way, Happy Christmas for everybody!
If you don't believe in Xmas, my wishes for better days anyway.

I renamed 611680021-1725970040.ffs to 611680021-1725970040.sh and 999999999-reboot.ffs to 999999999-reboot.sh (manually, using File Manager and F2), ignoring 611680021-1725970040_updatecert and it worked.

I will keep the text bellow just for historical purpose and because it may help others.

When I try this command, I receive
Code:
Bareword "ffs" not allowed while "strict subs" in use at (user-supplied code).
Can I rename each file using File Manager (and F2 key)? There are 3 ffs files (611680021-1725970040, 611680021-1725970040_updatecert and 999999999-reboot), may I rename all three to sh extension?

Can I use mv command?

(This is the only step I couldn't reproduce and maybe because of it the "Update your Kindle" is disabled when I update file update_kindle_3.4_B006-my-log.bin. Or not?

Thanks...

I know this is a OLD thread but I'm hoping someone could help out. I managed to get all the way up to version 3.2.1 on my Kindle 2 International "B003" but I hit nothing but errors trying to install 3.3. Any ideas?

Wow wasn't expecting anyone to reply. I actually got a hold of a K3W model to redo the files on the K2I. Using this https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...&postcount=475 I was able to get 3,3 on it. But I'm running into some trouble trying to get things patched so I can go from 3.3 to 3.4.2 due to ram constraints. I wish there was a package for generating the update from the K3W 3.4.2 like the 3.3 package did.

Their are several answers posted here, the best is to just enable swap.
Since the utilities for doing this are not included in the 3.x firmware, they are attached to posts in one of the threads here on this subject.

Update. I got 3.4.2 working on a K2I !!

After some messing around I found out I could modify the "3.3 kindle updater" from the post by @deagol, https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...&postcount=475 to work for 3.4. However the same method did not work for 3.4.2, kept giving a failed flash.

With 3.4 on the K2I I followed the OP instructions about patching "libwebkit" files locally on a PC so I could update to 3.4.2 but I ran into another issue. This post by @aharonium, https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...&postcount=261 , helped me with the "firmware.md5" issue, I just edited the lines involving patching that file out of the 3.4.2 update file Amazon.

Attached is a copy of my edited 3.4 updater and the edited part of the source. You must have a Kindle 3 to generate a 3.4 install file.
Attached Files
File Type: gz kindleupdater_source_3.4.patch.gz (571 Bytes, 247 views)
File Type: bin update_k3w-3.4-create_updater.bin (208.4 KB, 220 views)
File Type: bin update_k3g-3.4-create_updater.bin (208.4 KB, 228 views)
File Type: bin update_k3-3.4-create_updater.bin (208.4 KB, 228 views)
