I confess, for the biz, now, I still really like being able to just stamp the hell out of them, instead of trying to scribble in wee lines, and put "for deposit only, acct. xxxxxxxxx," on the back.

I know, I know. It's bizarre, the things we get lazy about, ain't it?
When you have to sign a whole lot of something, you start thinking about ways to make it easier.

Years back, the late Ray Bradbury was a guest at a West Coast SF convention, and did a signing. A fan approached with a paperback copy of every book Ray had written to get signed. Undaunted, Ray arranged the books standing up spine side out in a row on the table, whipped a magic marker from a pocket, and signed his name in flowing script across the top of the row. I was tickled when I heard about it.

I would have liked to have seen that.

(I recently saw a clever bundling, of a trilogy, in which the title for the bundle was printed across the spines; couldn't make heads nor tails of it, without all three of them. Nicely done.)

I've just realized that my brain has been replaced by snot; I read the word "excuses" ("apologies" in Dutch) and my brain thought I was reading the word "exodus", not a word you expect on a weather website.

First: Damn. I was wrong. I *do* mind building the computer. I actually hate it nowadays, even though it's not difficult. I've finished the build in a Fractal Define R5 midi-tower case. It's a pretty high-end system now, which will hopefully last many years.

Second: I couldn't get Turbo Boost working. No amount of tinkering and resetting in the BIOS would do it. Contradicting information: does the 6700K only have turbo on one core, or all of them? 1 thread, 4 threads, 8 threads, overload... no turbo. Reset, retry. No turbo.

Then I got a bright idea. "Hey. Maybe my board comes with an old BIOS." Went to the Asus site, and there was one newer BIOS, 2022. (The board had the next to newest version, 1902.) I update the BIOS, and *bam*, Turbo Boost works. (It actually seems to boost all four cores according to HWInfo64, instead of only one, as per Intel spec. Maybe that is the 'Asus core enhancement' setting, compared to 'Stock Intel setting.')

You got to be kidding me. This CPU & board combo has been on the market for 13-14 months already. I can't believe that, *if* Asus actually had a problem with Turbo Boost on this board, they took 14 months and 11 BIOS revisions to fix it. Yes, this board has had 11 (!) BIOS revisions; last one is just a month old.

Now you know why I always buy my stuff *just* before a new generation comes out. At the very least, I wait at least half a year or so, so there will be many reviews, and any BIOS/Firmware/Driver crap is fixed. I'd rather buy an 'old' system that has been ironed out for 6-12 months, than buy a fracking bleeding edge setup in the first week of release, of which nothing is known, and possibly be left fighting with issues for weeks or months. The number of times Asus has put "Overall System Stability Improved" in the change log of those BIOS revisions is staggering.

This 'buy late' strategy served me well; I haven't had any major problems with computers since 1998, except my most expensive mainboard ever (dual Xeon Asus PC-DL) died at an age of 3 years and 1 month; one month out of warranty, and no boards on the market for a reasonable price to host those two CPU's :X

Given how large my TBR is, and that those two are discountable at Kobo, I think I'll wait until either my TBR is a lot smaller, or I get some greater than 50% off Kobo discount codes...

Which two are guessing I'm talking about?

Also: have I mentioned how much I love the luxury of not yet owning the books on my TBR?
