Well, that was fun. Her writing is so witty and amusing. Next up, my first (but Parker's second) in the re-read of the Spenser series from Robert Parker. I'm starting with God Save the Child. I read most of these at the time of their release, so it's been a long time for them. I don't plan on 'binging' on them, but spacing them out over time.

Which was excellent. A coming of age story set in late 9th Century England. As with Sharpe, we have a fictional hero who is involved in mostly historical events, as much as we have those from 9th Century England.

When my TBR is smaller, or they're on special offer, I'll be getting the rest of the series.

Next up: The Long Utopia by Stephen Baxter and Terry Pratchett.

Just finished Night School by Lee Child. Definitely not one of his best Reacher books but a decent read. I'd give it maybe 3.5 stars

Next up The Given Day by Dennis Lehane

I did a complete reread a the whole series, back-to-back, a few years ago. Was a bit of a slog by the end, but still very enjoyable. To fill in some of my missing books I had to order a pile from Amazon USA, but at least I ended up with the full set. Have fun!

I agree, not his best Reacher, but still better than most, so I gave it 4 stars.

Which was a good read. Although the scenes from earlier times were dotted in oddly.

Next up: Dreams from my Father by Barak Obama.

I bought this earlier this year. I thought I ought to read it while he's still in office, although it was written before he was an elected politician of any kind.

Six chapters in and it is certainly intriguing. How did they get where they are, especially from where they were? How are the stations determined, and so forth?
With a little under a third of the book remaining, something is brewing - but what?

Paul's reference to Bernard Cornwell and Charlie's to binge-reading are leading me to acknowledge that I've been bingeing on Cornwell's Sharpe novels this year. This is unusual for me, as I don't ordinarily read series and when I do, I spin them out rather than burn out on them. And the Sharpe novels are eminently burnout fodder, as they're all exactly the same, with none better than three stars and a couple worth only two. Moreover, they're quite gory and I'm a tender plant.

But often when I'm in the mood for a mindless listen, I find myself reaching for the next one. They require no effort, Cornwell can really write a battle (but not sex) and they're not good enough not to squander, as with the similarly-set Aubrey/Maturin novels, where I exercise strict discipline not to read them quickly. Superior narration from Patrick Tull or Frederick Davidson also sucks me in; alas, a recent title was read by Steven Crossley.

I've listened to nine (!) of these books in the past year, starting with the fourth because I was more interested in the Napoleonic war stories. I may even have to read a few, which I won't like as much, now that we don't get Whispersync pricing on OverDrive borrows any more and my libraries don't own all the audiobooks. Had I but known, I would have bought them all while I could, but they're not credit-worthy.

I thought I'd binged on them a bit too, but looking at my list, I see I've only read the first three so far. Time for another soon!

The other historical melodrama I've been reading is the Poldark series set in late 18th century Cornwall. I'm reading them slowly so that I don't get ahead of the recent TV adaptions!

Finished Nobody's Son, which did not appeal me till the end. However, instead of abandoning it midway, I somehow swallowed it.

Next I plan to read Rasputin's Shadow by Raymond Khoury.

I backed off on Cornwell's Saxon Chronicles* when it became clear that: 1) I was catching up to the writer. And 2) the end of the series was not in yet in sight.

I'd be interested in picking it back up again if it was complete. Can anyone verify that it's done (as in done, done)?

* Back when it was still called The Saxon Chronicles and not The Last Kingdom series.

It is not done, but in the last book published (The Flame Bearer):
Spoiler:
He does manage to capture his father's castle.

Currently reading Valor's Choice by Tanya Huff. I've not been a big fan of hers, but this series seemed like it might be something I'd enjoy. And so far, it is.

I'm also listening to an audio book, the latest Safehold, At the Sign of Triumph. Somehow, I'm finding Weber and Safehold much easier to swallow in Audible snippets. Especially since the reader, Oliver Wyman, is excellent.

Probably because the awful spelling of the names isn't audible.

That's CERTAINLY a factor!!! (The absolute idiocy of it just astounds me, frankly.)
