What is your budget? We need to know that before we can make a sensible recommendation.

You could try the new Nook tablet. https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=280869

Samsung has a budget line of tablets.
https://www.cnet.com/topics/tablets/...udget-tablets/

Ignore the Fire and Apple items.

Acer also has some budget tablets. I bought one rather cheaply. It does Major League Baseball games well, so it should deal with movies.

Yotaphone also has a tablet.

Lenovo tablets are quite good at reasonable prices. The Nvidia Shield K1 tablet is also very nice for a good price.

Be warned: a good price for tablets is more expensive than even very nice ereaders. Your budget will make a huge difference here. Check eBay and look at used tablets, that can really help.

Minimum specs you should insist on: Android 5.1 or higher, 16 GB of internal storage, 1 GB of RAM, 1280 x 800 screen resolution.
Specs that will make a tablet actually usable: expandable storage/SD card slot, 2 GB of RAM, higher than 1280 x 800 screen resolution. The newer the Android version the better, newer versions come with many more security fixes and features. If you're going to store movies on it or install several apps you really want more than 16 GB of internal storage.

the fire HD tablets currently in amazons sale are by far the best value deals around.
and it is easy ( 10 mins of simple instructions) to add google play store and epub readers to those, if amazon books are not your thing

I can highly recommend the Lenovo Tab 2 A10-70, which is what I typed this on. A fantastic tablet for media consumption at a great price. (It was on sale from Lenovo Canada at $199.99 for Black Friday.)

I can't say whether it's good for gaming (I don't really play mobile games) but for reading PDFs and watching video it's great.

I also have the Lenovo Tab 2 A10 and I find it to be an excellent tablet for the light games I sometimes play. It has a really good screen.

Lenovo Tab 2 A10 - 70:
I just sold mine - good for your own videos yes, but both netflix and amazon video stream only in SD to Lenovo tablets - which is noticeable on a full HD 10 inch screen, less so on smaller screens ( I could stream my own stuff to it at 1080p the plex app )

I replaced with a used Samsung Tab S 10.5 at twice the price. The samsung screen is better but the samsung audio is nowhere near as good as the Lenovo which better speakers has Dolby Atmos on board. OK with good headphones though.
it all comes down to what features matter to you & how much wou want to spend. £29.99 for a fire 7 this weekend, up to 30 x that for the best i-pad , or something in-between.
With tablets, there is an obvious trade-off between thin-ness/ light-ness and audio quality.

FYI:
amazon video streaming in HD is restricted to Amazon Fire tablets, as is the X-Ray feature.
Netflix HD is only on a shortlist of whitelisted models ( see Netflix help pages),
Dolby Atmos is only on some Amazon & Lenovo models ( see Dolby Atmos web site)...

Not so. The "Prime Video" app on my iPad gives me both HD and X-Ray.

I stand corrected, not being an apple user.
amazon help pages say amazon video is SD only on android, except for their own Fire tablets
The very restrictive netflix whitelist, likewise is an Android thing. all current Ipads get netflix HD

but its not totally one-sided - you don't get dolby atmos on Apple( though that's mostly hype-ware If the'res any atmos encoded content for mobiles, I have yet to find it )

Just goes to show you I'm not the most discerning video consumer out there... I've never noticed that Netflix on my Tab 2 wasn't in HD. Learn something new...

Last Christmas I bought a Lenovo Yoga 1 Tablet for $230-ish CDN. I use it for Overdrive borrowing, have many of my calibre books imported onto the 64 GB microsd card I have mounted, I have the audible app as well as a couple audio book players as well.

My favorite reading app for my UN-drmed books is Moon+reader pro. If you have never purchased the pro version for android, it goes for 50% off mid August for its anniversary.

I like my tablet a lot because I can do quite a lot with a low-end tablet. Especially if most of what you do is read/listen to things. The high-end tablets are often geared toward gamers who like fast rendering graphics and such. I'm not as into that as most of my friends.

Good luck with your choosing!
