The lead-off freebie this week from YourClassical is Domenico Cimarosa - La Felicita Inaspettata: Overture.

The piece is all of 44 seconds long--that's it. In times like this, we need to remind ourselves that bigger is not always better. In point of fact, the piece is very pretty.

As is true the great majority of the time, the piece is taken from a Naxos album. This time it is Domenico Cimarosa - Overtures-5: Atene edificata - Componimento drammatico - La bella Greca - Il marito disperato. The entire album is performed by the Czech Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra Pardubice, and conducted by Patrick Gallois. Would you like to know more about the entire album? Naxos has a dedicated webpage giving information on it. Unfortunately, Naxos, at least, does not have a dedicated webpage of reviews of this album.

Congratulations, and thanks for helping us spot the goodie in our email inbox.

I'm not sure what you meant by "a first," but Google Play has done this before--in the ancient past. ha Probably 7 or 8 years ago, I got a $10 credit from them. Because of how cheap . . . er . . . frugal that I am, it took well over a year for me to use it all. Didn't buy many books from them (I never have), but bought some albums that seem like they were 99 cents and $1.29 each--something like that.

How about a free George Frederic Handel MP3 piece? I think that I could certainly handle that.

YourClassical is offering, as its daily download today, a 3 minute, 33 minute piece of his entitled Ode for St. Cecilia's Day: Overture. It comes from an eponymous Naxos album.

Credited for performance of the album is Concerto Polacco, with Wolfgang Helbich as the conductor. Three others are listed on the album cover as participating in bringing the performances on the album to fruition; however, they are singers or vocal ensembles, but there is no singing on the free piece--it is purely instrumental.

Find out the particulars of that information, and more about the entire album--of a general or miscellaneous nature--at this Naxos webpage dedicated to the album. On the selfsame page is a link to "Reviews," that you might be interested in following, in order to see what others might have said about the album.

With it being Tuesday, that means that we can have another free Classical-music.com download to enjoy! Today, it is Rachmaninov's Six moments musicaux.

This week's free download is the Presto from Rachmaninov's Six moments musicaux, performed by pianist Boris Giltburg. It comes from a recent recording on Naxos that includes Rachmaninov's Études-tableaux, on which Giltburg has written an exclusive guest blog for BBC Music Magazine.

The Six moments musicaux is a set of movements inspired by previous musical eras - the Presto was largely inspired by the music of Chopin.

Sounds like a good one, doesn't it? And I can vouch for that, as I'm listening to it now. I would call it a very lively piano piece; that may be a characteristic of Rachmaninov's compositions, I simply don't know enough about classical music, yet, to say.

Should you wish to purchase the Naxos album from which the free piece is taken, the name of the album is Rachmaninov - Etudes-tableaux, Op. 39 - Moments musiceaux.

The procedure to download the free piece is the same as always. Click on the bright red "download now" button that partially covers the thumbnail of the album cover of this week's free download webpage at Classical-music.com. Non-US residents can now sign up for Amazon Prime in the US and stream Amazon Originals

Just an FYI for those in the US with access to a Costco. They have $50 Google Play cards on sale for $41.99 right now, limit three per member. You can apply these to your Google play balance and use them to buy eBooks, apps, movies, music, etc. This deal is available both in-store and online, but you have to be a Costco member to purchase it.
