A "startup"? iRex have been around for years surely?

Several years, yes, but one gets the impression that they are a "two guys in a back room" type of company.

hmm, as long as they keep producing dr1000, they can even be "a single guy with a very serious multiple personality disorder"
now if some of those personalities manage to release 1.5 tomorrow, that'd be perfect wouldn't it?

Kind regards

They're definitely a small company, but they're obviously not a "startup". Their main strength is the display technology engineering that they do. Many people don't realize that in addition to the iLiad and DR1000, a lot of the other manufacturers devices (kindle, PRS-500, etc) have iRex hardware in them.

That's why they are the only ones with an 8" and 10.2" display. They work closely with PVI during the engineering of most of the eInk displays, and can design special ones for their own devices. Most consumers aren't aware of that because it's behind the scenes, so we tend to forget how much iRex has been involved with eInk technology in general.

As to their software development, I don't really know how many people they have, but I do get the impression that it's a pretty small team. I don't know if it's necessarily "two guys in a back room"... it might be three.

Karel has just announced that 1.5 is out in the irex forum. My device does not seem to care about the announcement though I get no updates when I connect it...

Best Regards

My first impressions: the wake up from sleep is quite fast, much faster than I expected, and minimum waiting time before sleep is 30 secs.
the toolbar is very nice! the device will become much more usable I guess

I wasn't aware that other devices had irex engineering int them, thankf for the heads up. As far as start up goes, I guess I used the wrong word, I meant start up only in terms of size as in different that an a sony, but it was the wrong term.

Their developer mentioned earlier on their forum that you can also configure the suspend timeout to any value you want in a config file. Hopefully more details of that will come out soon. That way you can go in and set it to 10, 15... anything you want.

Yeah, no doubt that companies like Sony, Amazon, etc, are vastly larger than iRex.

Their automatic update process probably hasn't caught up to the new version yet, hopefully that will happen soon. You can go and download it manually though.

FYI, they mentioned that the automatic process only checks once a day. So if you tried earlier to see if 1.5 was ready yet, then it won't really go out and update against their server again until tomorrow. If you want the update sooner, you can download it manually from their site using the link Adam gave above.

FYI, the "last minute update" they were talking about was a new version of the software driver for the battery module from their supplier. I don't know specifically what it fixed, but IMO, something like that is worth a couple extra days.
