Quite possible. I did not mean to imply that a company is a person , and I am sure there is a person or persons who did the actual translating.

However, AmazonCrossing is the part of Amazon Publishing that arranges for the translation (and marketing) of titles in foreign languages into English, and I did mean to indicate that AmazonCrossing was the moving force behind the titles being translated at all. The Body in the Thames is the sixth in the Thomas Chaloner series by Susanna Gregory. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle US. Gregory's books don't go on sale very often, so I am happy to see this one.

Opening 3 of them up for quick viewing, it appears that the translator is Owen Witesman, and not AmazonCrossing. Of course, the publisher or the agent (and in some unusual cases, the author) will actually arrange for a translation. In extremely rare cases - as in author Vladimir Nabokov - he translated his earlier work into English himself.

But the translation (again, only on 3 that I checked) are by Owen Witesman.

--- Thanks for the heads up on this author. I bought one, the first one in the series, and will give it a try. Unfortunately, there are a number of negative comments regarding the translation. And the fictional heroine is no longer a youthful 23, but an aged (and ancient and wrinkled) 49 year old crone. In fictional terms, that is!!!!

The unflappable Inspector George Gently has become a household name through the hit BBC TV series starring Martin Shaw. These are the original books on which the TV series was based, although the George Gently in Alan Hunter's whodunits is somewhat different to his TV counterpart. He is more calculating, more analytical, and his investigations are even more enthralling.

In this title:
Gently sets out for the north of Scotland to help clear one of his oldest friends of a murder charge and reunite him with the woman he loves. A love story founders on the rocks of the wild coastline of western Scotland when a man falls to his death. Did he fall or was he pushed? The knife wounds on his body tend to suggest the latter. Although he knows his rank gives him no status in Scotland, Gently travels north to help out, the prime suspect being a close friend.

Somehow, the show must go on…

Norma Gold and her friend Pearl are co-producing a Broadway revival of Guys and Dolls, with the help of Maxwell Sapphire, who hasn’t had a hit in four years.

Alexander Gold and Burton Hanslik have invested $2.5 million in the show, so Norma and Pearl are under pressure to make it a winner!

There are always problems in the theatre.

And Sapphire is determined for his mistress, Lisa Terrane, to star in a role on which rests the whole show…

The night of the preview Warshafsky suddenly announces that he must arrest Carol at once and Alexander finds himself in a race against time to save Carol, the show, his wife, his money and his pride.

The Gold Gamble is an entertaining thriller with as much humour as suspense.

The Gold Frame is the third in the Alexander Gold series by Herbert Resnicow. I, at least, have not seen this one on sale before - it has dropped to $0.99 at Kindle US. Strangely enough for an Endeavour Press title, it's not on Countdown, so not sure how long this price will last, but Endeavour Press price drops/freebies usually don't last too long (but often repeat). At this point, I've now seen four of the five (per SYKM) titles be $0.99 or free in the fairly recent past.

Perhaps there was some confusion when you originally wrote that the books were "translated by AmazonCrossing," which you went on to correct that you did not actually mean what you wrote.

We all write things we don't mean. At least, I would assume that we all do. I know that I have done this on occasion.

Cross-posting, on the other hand, is merely a natural communicative phenomenon when members are interested in furthering the discussion of an interesting topic. Your misstatement generated some interesting and further discussion on the issue of translations.

I think your postings - almost every one that you make - are quite interesting.
