The Late Scholar (Lord Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane series Book 4) by Jill Paton Walsh 99p

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00D8CSTYG/

A new murder mystery featuring Lord Peter Wimsey - now a Duke - and his wife Harriet Vane, set in an Oxford college in the 1950s.
Peter Wimsey is pleased to discover that along with a Dukedom he has inherited the duties of 'visitor' at an Oxford college. When the fellows appeal to him to resolve a dispute, he and Harriet set off happily to spend some time in Oxford.

Not up to Dorothy Sayers' best or even Jill Paton Walsh's best, but OK and Great Value.

The 600 Pound Gorilla is the second in the Jimmy Flannery series by Robert Campbell. It has dropped to $0.99 as a US Kindle Countdown deal for about the next 6 3/4 days.
link: https://www.amazon.com/Pound-Gorilla...dp/B015ELAD60/
Spoiler:
Quote:
***Edgar Award Wining Author*** --- Even from the outset it promised to be an extraordinary assignment for Jimmy Flannery -- Chicago tough-guy and precinct captain of the 27th ward. Freezing winter temperatures had overloaded the generator at Lincoln Zoo and now Baby --- the city's favorite gorilla --- needs a place to stay.

Flannery thinks he's found the perfect sanctuary, even though the Paradise Baths are better known as a social hot-spot for Chicago's gay community. But when two men are found beaten to death in the Paradise steam room, only Flannery believes that Baby is innocent. And soon he is forced to put his own life in danger to prove it . . .

Also, if you like to read in order, the first title in this series, The Junkyard Dog, is a long-term freebie at Kindle US. Per SYKM, it won a couple of awards back when it was published.
link: https://www.amazon.com/Junkyard-Jimm...dp/B0153KUVUK/
Spoiler:
Quote:
***Edgar Award Winner*** - The Junkyard Dog -- Chicago is Jimmy Flannery's kind of town. A tough Irishman with street smarts, he's part of a political machine that runs on favors and friendships. Flannery's particular piece of the patronage is the 27th Ward, and anything that happens there is his business. Even murder.

So when an antiabortion demonstration ends with a bomb blast that kills a pretty young girl and an old woman, Flannery takes it personally. But someone's stonewalling the investigation, and Flannery's starting to wonder if the bombing was political, or as a cover-up for murder. Something smells rotten -- from the Gold Coast to the South Side. And when the killer goes after Flannery's lady love, Flannery doesn't just get mad -- he gets as mean as a junkyard dog -- on the scent of the dirty politics mixed with passion and revenge, a very deadly combination . . .

Quite possible. I did not mean to imply that a company is a person , and I am sure there is a person or persons who did the actual translating.

However, AmazonCrossing is the part of Amazon Publishing that arranges for the translation (and marketing) of titles in foreign languages into English, and I did mean to indicate that AmazonCrossing was the moving force behind the titles being translated at all. See this NY Times article: http://www.nytimes.com/2015/04/30/ar...e-us.html?_r=0

The Body in the Thames is the sixth in the Thomas Chaloner series by Susanna Gregory. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle US. Gregory's books don't go on sale very often, so I am happy to see this one.

link: https://www.amazon.com/Body-Thames-T...dp/B00GW4PAVC/

Spoiler:
Quote:
In the dilapidated surroundings of the Savoy hospital, a delegation from the Netherlands has gathered for a final attempt to secure peace between the two nations. Thomas Chaloner, active in Holland during Cromwell's time, knows many of the delegates, including the sister of his late wife.

Then the body of his former brother-in-law is found in the Thames. Chaloner discovers that the dead man has left enigmatic clues to a motivation for his murder. Was he involved in a plot to steal the crown jewels, or did he fall foul of one of the many people in London who are determined that the peace talks will fail?

Opening 3 of them up for quick viewing, it appears that the translator is Owen Witesman, and not AmazonCrossing. Of course, the publisher or the agent (and in some unusual cases, the author) will actually arrange for a translation. In extremely rare cases - as in author Vladimir Nabokov - he translated his earlier work into English himself.

But the translation (again, only on 3 that I checked) are by Owen Witesman.

--- Thanks for the heads up on this author. I bought one, the first one in the series, and will give it a try. Unfortunately, there are a number of negative comments regarding the translation. And the fictional heroine is no longer a youthful 23, but an aged (and ancient and wrinkled) 49 year old crone. In fictional terms, that is!!!!

AmazonCrossing is the name of the part of Amazon's publishing arm which commissions and publishes translations. They don't do the translation themselves - they hire someone to do it.

Witesman is the translator, AmazonCrossing is the publisher. AmazonCrossing is an imprint at APub where they offer works translated into english. They also take suggestions for works to put out in English if anyone has any ideas for them...

Death in Devon is the second in the County Guides series by Ian Sansom. It has dropped to $0.99 at Kindle US.

link: https://www.amazon.com/Death-Devon-C...dp/B011ITBWVC/

Spoiler:
Quote:
Love Miss Marple? Adore Holmes and Watson? Professor Morley’s guide to Devon is a story of bygone England; quaint villages, eccentric locals—and murder…

Swanton Morely, the People’s Professor, sets off for Devon to continue his history of England, The County Guides. Morley’s daughter, Miriam, and his assistant, Stephen Sefton, pack up the Lagonda for a trip to the English Riviera.

Morely has been invited to give the Founder’s Day speech at All Souls School in Rousdon. But when the trio arrive they discover that a boy has died in mysterious circumstances. Was it an accident or was it murder?

Join Morely, Sefton, and Miriam on another adventure into the dark heart of 1940s England.

A must-read for fans of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie, and Charles Todd, there’ll be plenty of murder, mystery, and mayhem to confound.

Gently with Love is the 22nd (if I counted correctly) in the Inspector Gently series by Alan Hunter. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle US.

link: https://www.amazon.com/Gently-Love-A...dp/B00OGUP1YK/

Spoiler:
Quote:
The unflappable Inspector George Gently has become a household name through the hit BBC TV series starring Martin Shaw. These are the original books on which the TV series was based, although the George Gently in Alan Hunter's whodunits is somewhat different to his TV counterpart. He is more calculating, more analytical, and his investigations are even more enthralling.

In this title:
Gently sets out for the north of Scotland to help clear one of his oldest friends of a murder charge and reunite him with the woman he loves. A love story founders on the rocks of the wild coastline of western Scotland when a man falls to his death. Did he fall or was he pushed? The knife wounds on his body tend to suggest the latter. Although he knows his rank gives him no status in Scotland, Gently travels north to help out, the prime suspect being a close friend.

Despite the fact that the evidence weighs heavily against him, Gently cannot bring himself to believe that his friend committed murder, even if the victim was a hated love rival. He must use all of his skill as a detective to find a way to prove his friend?s innocence. Highland hospitality, however, doesn?t always extend to cooperating with a murder investigation.

And now the fifth and last in the series, The Gold Gamble, is free at Kindle US.

link: https://www.amazon.com/Gold-Gamble-N...dp/B01MF9FINH/

Spoiler:
Quote:
'Resnicow writes brightly with bouncy humor. Norma and Alex are a likeable couple in the tradition of Nick and Nora Charles and Jerry and Pamela North.' – Washington Post Book World

Somehow, the show must go on…

Norma Gold and her friend Pearl are co-producing a Broadway revival of Guys and Dolls, with the help of Maxwell Sapphire, who hasn’t had a hit in four years.

Alexander Gold and Burton Hanslik have invested $2.5 million in the show, so Norma and Pearl are under pressure to make it a winner!

There are always problems in the theatre.

And Sapphire is determined for his mistress, Lisa Terrane, to star in a role on which rests the whole show…

But Norma and Pearl force him to star an old school friend of Norma’s, Carol Sands, instead, but to placate Sapphire, Lisa Terrane is made Carol’s understudy.

Then, three days before the critics’ preview, Lisa Terrane is found cruelly murdered in her dressing room.

And Carol Sands is the only person on the floor at that time…

Burton persuades Lieutenant Warshafsky to hold off arresting his star until the critics’ preview night.

But it is made very clear that if Alexander Gold can’t solve the case by then, the show will have to close, taking with it Norma’s and Pearl’s dreams and all of Alexander’s and Burton’s money…

The night of the preview Warshafsky suddenly announces that he must arrest Carol at once and Alexander finds himself in a race against time to save Carol, the show, his wife, his money and his pride.

The Gold Gamble is an entertaining thriller with as much humour as suspense.

Perhaps there was some confusion when you originally wrote that the books were "translated by AmazonCrossing," which you went on to correct that you did not actually mean what you wrote.

We all write things we don't mean. At least, I would assume that we all do. I know that I have done this on occasion.

Cross-posting, on the other hand, is merely a natural communicative phenomenon when members are interested in furthering the discussion of an interesting topic. Your misstatement generated some interesting and further discussion on the issue of translations.

I think your postings - almost every one that you make - are quite interesting.
