Actually, that's very easy to turn off in the settings on the device.

I don't see ads on my Kindle. I'm happy to pay the $20 to avoid them.

It wouldn't be my deciding factor in purchasing a reader, but you can compare the same book on two different devices and see differences in the rendering.
I often compare readers side by side. often with the same book and the same page. When one of my neighbors is considering getting an ereader I'll do this to give them an idea of what's available. Side by side the differences are big. When I'm reading they fade away and I'm in the story. I don't remember which device I'm using until something calls it to my attention such as looking up a word in the dictionary.

The key for me is which do I enjoy reading most and the answer usually has to do with size, weight, and how the thing feels in my hand. I keep a Kobo Aura handy without a cover and that's the clear winner with respect to that. It just feels good to hold. Next is the Voyage.

Actually, my phone wins on all counts for reading but it has an LCD screen and gives me eyestrain so I can only use it for short sessions. If that wasn't the case I doubt I'd even bother with ereaders. I'd just use the phone.

I'm kind of the same way with TV shows and movies. I haven't owned a TV in years and yet I watch shows and movies, mostly on my 15" laptop but also on my various tablets. Also I keep an old 5" phone on my nightstand to listen to old time radio shows as I fall asleep or to watch a TV show or movie when I can't sleep. My neighbors are always trying to explain that my screens aren't big enough but I don't really get that. When I watch a TV show the picture fills my eyes and my mind is full of the story and the characters and the device simply doesn't exist.

I went to bed early the other night and woke up early and lay in bed watching an old show of "Laramie" on that 5" screen and thoroughly enjoyed it. TV sets are just so twentieth century.

You can turn that off on a Kindle. I have mine set in list mode with recommendations turned off so all I see on my home screen is a set of menus on top and a list of my books below.

When I browse books on my Kobo I tap the Library button and then Books and see a list of my books there as well. I don't want fancy. I don't want glitz. I just want titles and authors.

I have a 7" Fire tablet as well as some older Fire tablets and more and more with each update Amazon keeps finding more ways to advertise to me on them. I find that pretty offensive. I bought those tablets and paid for no ads and I'm getting ads anyway. I've been a big fan of Amazon for years and living in a small town with no car I depend on them but lately they're starting to get to me a little. I just transferred a file to my Fire this morning using Wifi Explorer and halfway through the transfer an ad popped up on the screen, killing the transfer. If Jeff Bezos had been nearby...well, maybe I better not say what I'd like to do because he's younger and bigger than me.

Anyway that isn't a problem yet with e-ink Kindles. When it is I'll have to decide what to do. I remember a few years ago Amazon did something, maybe it was a survey question in their forum, I forget, anyway it was asking customers how they felt about books with advertising in them. I replied that if they want me to stop buying books and start looking for pirate copies without ads that's the way to do it. I guess they got a lot of negative responses because so far they haven't done it.

Settings -> Device Options -> Personalise Your Kindle -> Advanced Options

Set the "Display recommended content from store" slider to "Off".

Good to know. I've not owned a Kindle and was going off of what I've seen on display models/reviews/screenshots.

I know that I'm in the minority here, but I personally love my glowlight plus. I too have used the H2O and the nook. Although the rendering of fonts is much mor customizable on the Kobo, the overall rendering is softer on the nook, more like a book. Plus, it just works. Oh, and the flush screen is a plus. You can get one for cheap on Amazon and eBay.

I have a nook STR and the font rendering is nowhere near as good as it is on the Kobo Readers and even Sony Readers. The STR is softer (aka less weight) for the exact same font.

By softer, I mean the overall look. It's more yellow than blue. It's a personal preference that's not right or wrong. I laugh because any comment tends to bring out a strong defense for a particular brand or reader. Each brand has its positives when compared to another. Kobo, Kindle, and Nooks are all good and they all provide an excellent reading experience.

I own a nook STR and the font rendering on it is not as good as Sony or Kobo. Using exactly the same font on the nook and the same font on my PRS650 I found the font on the 650 to be slightly darker. Both devices are using a 6" Pearl screen with 800x600 resolution.

The Nook ST had a resolution of 800X600. The Glowlight Plus has a resolution of 1430×1080. Thinks have changed a bit since you bought your Nook.

But has the font rendering software changed?

The ebook rendering engine in the glowlight plus is different. The font choices are the same. To each his own...I think this horse is dead.

dieterpops seems to be talking about lighting temperature, which has nothing to do with fonts or fonts rendering. And can vary a little between otherwise identical devices.

Well I can give you a little bit more about use in high temperatures.

Original Nook, - does quite well. Take it in the Sauna first then to the steam room and no issues ever.

Original Glow Light, - seemed to do quite well, but one day inexplicably (and not at the gym) the screen died, everything else on it works.

Glow Light (white) - doesn't do so well with heat, freezes after prolonged exposure to heat but then does continue to work once cooled off.

I may have to try the Kobo now.

Can you provide a few more details? Are you using the Nook with the LCD at the bottom in a steam room? Without cover? And it has survived many visits and still works?
