Port problem(s?) with content server

Hi,

I'm getting an error message regarding port 8080 not being free whenever I try to start up the content server in calibre.

Now, I realise that that's probably caused by something else on my system holding on to the port, so I tried changing the port that calibre used to test this out. I got the same error message, still regarding port 8080, and when I opened the settings again they had reverted to 8080.

Forgot to mention - System is Vista Ultimate.

As a second, minor issue - would it be possible to allow typing the port number into the field in Settings? Having to scroll down from 8080 to, say, 80 would be a pain.

You can type in that field, but only numbers. Locate the file server.py and change the port number there, something on your system is preventing calibre from saving its settings.

Thanks for the fast reply Kovid - I'll check it out when I get home this evening.

I did try typing the port number in but it kept reverting - it looks like the same issue on my system is causing both problems. I'll see if I can find out what's causing that and report back - hopefully it will help someone else later on.

You could just try running calibre-server from the command line.

calibre-server -p 8090

That will be a quick way to test out whether or not it's a port problem, yes. Thanks for the idea.

I do want to find out why I can't change the config file, as I suspect that may cause other problems further down the track. I'm guessing it will be as simple as ticking the "Run as admin" box for calibre.

Where did you put your calibre folder. You should put it in a location that doesn't require admin permission to save data. Usually that is your User/Home folder in Vista. Don't put it in the Program Files or root of C:.

The program files are under Program Files\Media\calibre. The database and book files are on an external drive.

You could well be right - I'll try a re-install under User\Home and see if that helps.

To be Vista UAC compatible an application should not store config files in the Program Files tree if they need to be modified after initial installation. I am not sure if this is where calibre stores it's config files. But, if it is than it needs to be changed. Of course, running the app "as administrator" will certainly resolve this.

calibre most certainly does not store its config files under Program Files. It stores its config files where the OS tells it to.

Kewl, I have everything working well on my internal home network. Are there any Windows Users (Vista) that know what I need to do to enable me to access my books from another location outside of my home. Obiously I have access to WIFI Hotspots and Internet access via Phone.
Im assuming I need some sort of Web server that puts my home PC out there.
Going to investigate ORB while I wait for someone with more knowlege than me to help me out.

If you are using a PC, then you might find the Calibre2Web thread in this forum to be of interest?

In terms of a web server you can use the one built into Vista, The one supplied by Calibre, or one running on another box on your home network. I use this last option in conjunction with Calibre2Web to make my book collection availalbe from anywhere on my iPhone. The main thing is to know how to set up the tunnelling through your home router to allow an external client on the internet to access the web server running on your home machine.

Do not forget that if you are going to allow access from the internet it is important that you set up the web server to at least require a usename/password for access or you are potentially exposing your book collection to all-and-sundry.

Question, how do you set up the reverse proxy stuff? I'm really new to Apache and I found the documentation to be not as noob-friendly as the PHP or Python docs.

For example, I have multiple Calibre libraries and an Apache server with external address somerandom.dyndns.org. How do I get the multiple servers to resolve to the following?
mom:8080 -> somerandom.dyndns.org/mom
dad:8080 -> somerandom.dyndns.org/dad
peskybrother:8080 -> somerandom.dyndns.org/peskybrother
mybooks:8080 -> somerandom.dyndns.org/books
myfanfics:8080 -> somerandom.dyndns.org/fanfics

I currently have two virtual machines running Apache 2.2.11 and one virtual machine with XAMPP 1.7.0, all under Windows XP Professional SP3. The Apache and XAMPP installations are using default settings which are likely unsecure so some pointers on hardening the server would be helpful, too.

If what you are quoting is meant to represent different virtual servers funning under on the same machine, then each virtual server has to use a different port.

For instance on my NAS I have several virtual servers configured under apache serving different purposes:

Port 80: NAS Admin
Port 8000: Media Server admin
Port 8080: General web server
Post 8008: Calibre library

Of course the alternative is to run a single server instance and put each area under its own sub-folder. In such a case you do not need separate port addresses, but the sub-folder needs to be included in the URL.
