And that's actually the problem. What you have actually done is trained yourself not to go to sleep until after you have read in bed. If you change that to reading before getting into bed, with some actions between (cleaning your teeth, putting the cat out, etc), you will find yourself going to sleep quicker when you get into bed.

I did this about 20 years ago after reading an article in some magazine. I realised that no matter what time I went to bed, I had to read before I could sleeping. Even if I stayed up to the early hours after being out, I still needed to read. When I changed the pattern, I found that I was sleeping easier and better overall. Of course, since I've gotten ereaders with lights, I've broken that habit and am not sleeping anywhere near as well. |

David, I don't think they want to hear what the cognoscenti have to say about the importance of only using the bed for sleeping.

I'm completely serious. I know what some neuroscientists/doctors/psychologists say about only ever using a bed for sleeping and sex. It just doesn't work for my life. Not all generic advice applies to every individual.

Especially in winter, I'll go to bed early simply because the bed is nice and warm (at least, after a while...) Most of the times I read a book, sometimes I listen to an audiobook (when it's especially cold and I don't want to put my nose out of the covers ), very rarely do I watch TV.Naturally, I could sit up in the livingroom, turn on the heater, watch TV until 22:00 and then go to bed and fall asleep immediately... It'll only costs me more money, is worse for the environment and I'll be bored out of my mind for 2 hours... (only 1 TV in the living room, I never liked reading while there's a radio or TV on and my husband also likes to watch TV). |

Honestly, I never thought this would turn into a debate on where and when you're allowed to read.

I turned the auto brightness off, as I didn't like it changing willy-nilly and found the changes irritating. Maybe it just needs some getting used to and I should try it again.

The natural light automatic works just fine and I set it to auto. During the day I usually set the brightness around 50% and down to 1 or 2% at night, with bedroom lights out. |

I read in bed all the time and have zero problems getting to sleep. Everybody is wired differently.
