Thanks for the link to the ebook. I just commented in another thread (where the *wrong* "Black Ice" was for free) that I had gotten THIS "Black Ice" free with my first kindle. But it's no longer in my amazon account. I've been meaning to go buy it again, but haven't bother to look for it. Now I'll do so!

(Yeah, I know it's not a particular sale. But I wanted to read it again.)

Adventures of Huckleberry Finn --> Twain's Tom and Huck Series (book 2 of 5)

Whispersync: Audible ($x.xx) | Kindle ($x.xx)

Audible is pleased to announce the premiere of an exciting new series, Audible Signature Classics, featuring literature’s greatest stories, performed by accomplished stars handpicked for their ability to interpret each work in a new and refreshing way. The first book in the series is Mark Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, performed by Elijah Wood.

Ernest Hemingway said, “All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn". One hundred years after its author’s death, this classic remains remarkably modern and poignantly relevant. In this brand new edition, Elijah Wood reads Huck in a youthful voice that may be the closest interpretation to Twain’s original intent. His performance captures the excitement and confusion of adolescence and adventure. Best of all, the immediacy of Wood’s energetic reading sweeps listeners up and makes them feel as though they’re along for the ride, as Huck and Jim push their raft toward freedom.

Stay tuned for more one-of-a-kind performances from actors Kenneth Branagh, David Hyde Pierce, Leelee Sobieski, and more, only from Audible Signature Classics.

Listen to more Audible Signature Classics.

Quote:
Audible Editor Reviews

Elijah Wood’s performance is my nominee for the Narrators’ Hall of Fame. Wood’s unself-conscious reading doesn’t sound like a reading at all. He creates an entire world filled with people who cross class and color lines. His accents range from British to faux-British to all manner of regional affectations, twangs, and drawls. Wood’s delivery makes Mark Twain’s delicious wit and twisty language sound completely natural, especially as Huck invents plausible words to suit the moment. The journey down the Mississippi with Huck and Jim is pure pleasure, as the boy who won’t be "sivilized" and the runaway slave encounter scoundrels, slip out of scrapes, and invent outrageous tales. The listening couldn’t be better if Huck read the story himself.
How do I listen to this? -- You have free streaming access to this audiobook with Audible Channels for Prime. To start listening, download the free Audible app, sign in with your Amazon account, and browse Prime Exclusive Audiobooks within the Channels tab.

Note: Android, iOS & Win 10 apps only -- offline listening NOT allowed. This is a new daily feature I'm adding to bring added awareness for this program. Audible has nothing to do with this.

The Zig Zag Girl --> Stephens and Mephisto Series (book 1 of 3)

Whispersync: Audible ($4.49) | Kindle ($9.99)

In the first installment of a compelling new series by Elly Griffiths, a band of magicians who served together in World War II track a killer who’s performing their deadly tricks.

Brighton, 1950. The body of a girl is found cut into three pieces. Detective Inspector Edgar Stephens is convinced the killer is mimicking a famous magic trick—the Zig Zag Girl. The inventor of the trick, Max Mephisto, is an old war friend of Edgar’s. They served together in a shadowy unit called the Magic Men, a special ops troop that used stage tricks to confound the enemy.

Max is on the traveling show circuit, touring seaside towns with ventriloquists, sword-swallowers, and dancing girls. He’s reluctant to leave this world to help Edgar investigate but advises him to identify the victim quickly—it takes a special sidekick to do the Zig Zag Girl. Those words come back to haunt Max when the dead girl turns out to be Ethel, one of his best assistants to date. He’s soon at Edgar’s side, hunting for Ethel’s killer.

Another death, another magic trick: Edgar and Max are sure the answer to the murders lies in their army days. And when Edgar receives a letter warning of another “trick” on the way—the Wolf Trap—he knows they’re all in the killer’s sights.

$4.95 -- The Kept Woman -- Karin Slaughter/ Kathleen Early --> 16.2 hrs/ R-4.5 --> thriller

Quote:
The Kept Woman --> Will Trent Series (book 8 of 8)

Whispersync: Audible ($4.49) | Kindle ($9.99)

It’s the most dangerous case of Will Trent’s career. He knows this from the moment he sets foot in the abandoned Atlanta warehouse where a body lies on the floor—the body of an ex-cop. Bloody footprints leading away from the scene reveal that another victim, evidently a woman, was carried away … and has vanished into thin air. And, worst of all, the warehouse belongs to the city’s biggest and most high-profile athlete—a local hero protected by the world’s most expensive lawyers. A hero married to Will’s ex-wife. A hero whom Will’s superiors at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation have spent the last six months investigating for rape.

But for Will—and also for Sara Linton, the GBI’s newest medical examiner—the case is about to get even worse. Because an unexpected discovery at the scene reveals a personal link to Will’s troubled past … and the consequences will wreak havoc on his life and the lives of those he loves, those he works with, and those he pursues.

Relentlessly suspenseful and furiously paced, peopled with characters who leap from the page, The Kept Woman marks Karin Slaughter’s triumphant return to her most popular series.

I wish the prices would change. Down. With or without notice.

The first audiobook of the first set is usually a reasonable price--if you download it. It seems like most of the rest of the first set are modestly priced, but that's all. And I think that that's only if you download.

None of the audiobooks of the second set are what I ever would call reasonably priced unless, perhaps, the first one. And in the case of the first audiobook of the second set this time it's $27.99 or so. And the only way that you can get it at all is as a CD. I think that some of the rest you can get as a download and save some money.

This is no criticism of your post. As you've said before, you're committed to posting everything that is billed a sale or special, whether or not it is a very good price or not (my words). That's a worthy goal. I won't post anything that I don't think is a super bargain. A difference in styles, I guess.

Thanks, again, for all that you do.

Different strokes, I guess. I frequently pick up a title from the Downpour weekly deals and I almost never buy an Audible daily deal. I find the Downpour selections far more interesting and they're still much cheaper than the per-credit price at either vendor. And Downpour downloads are DRM-free, so I can listen to them on my waterproof MP3 player.

I don't have an opinion on CD prices; I don't know whether the Downpour sale prices are good, bad or indifferent. I'm not in the market, so it's irrelevant I hope it's a model that works for Downpour, as I'd like to see them succeed.

Get the torches and pitchforks out and fire up the rabble -- "Down with Prices"

Anyway, quite a few of Downpour's offers are not reasonably priced in my opinion too. Look at the Deal of the Month and Editor's Pick priced at $19.99 and $20.39 respectively - yikes! But you can usually get them for 1 credit ($12.99) if you sign up for the monthly membership. You can cancel anytime, sign up again, then cancel, etc. Plus, you can buy more credits anytime for $12.99 each. So the most you actually have to pay for most of their catalog is $12.99.

Yes, people are different, and we definitely look at this matter differently. Thanks for pointing out Downpour's advantages.

I had heard before, but forgotten when I made that post, that their audiobooks are DRM-Free. That's something that I've paid very little attention to about audiobooks, but may wish, in the future, that I had. The same holds true for ebooks.

The model seems to be working for Downpour, but I'm not privy to their balance sheet, income statements, and other financial documents, of course. They could go belly-up tomorrow. I wish for Downpour to succeed, for several reasons. I don't want to see any company fail. Well, except for Walmart and a few, much smaller, companies.

New AudioBook Club, from AudiobooksNow (Formerly AudioFile).

I didn't find anything on the O.P. about this.

I have been getting emails from a company called AudioFile (cute name, huh?) over the years. Heretofore, they've only sold audiobooks, I think. I never bought anything from them, that I remember. Frankly, I'd have to go back and check the old emails from them, because I think that they didn't even offer downloading--they only sold the physical product (CD's). They were basically like AudiobookStand, if you are familiar with them.

Well, the most recent email that I received in which "AudioFile" was shown as the sender seems to reveal a couple of major changes with the company. First, they apparently just started offering downloads and streaming. Second, they apparently just started a new book club, that they had not had before. And, third, they are doing business under a different name--it's no longer AudioFile, but Audiobooks Now. The new name is one of the things that make me think that they are trying to go off into a new direction with the business.

Anyway, I mainly wanted to tell you about the audiobook club. Actually, I wasn't mainly planning to tell you about the audiobook club--I mainly was going to give you Audiobooks Now's webpage and let you do most of the exploring. Appropriately enough, their new website is http://www.audiobooksnow.com.

See what you think. Maybe someone would even be kind enough to study up on their new audiobook club and give interested MobileReaders a summary of what they're doing and maybe even give his or her "take" on them.

Quote:
The Secret Life of Bees

Whispersync: Audible (£1.99) | Kindle (£4.99)

A fabulous coming-of-age debut novel that has sold over 5 million copies worldwide, and has been made into a movie starring Queen Latifah, Alicia Keys, Sophie Okonedo, and Paul Bettany.

Lily has grown up believing she accidentally killed her mother when she was four. She not only has her own memory of holding the gun, but her father's account of the event. Now 14, she yearns for her mother, and for forgiveness. Living on a peach farm in South Carolina with her father, she has only one friend: Rosaleen, a black servant whose sharp exterior hides a tender heart.

South Carolina in the '60s is a place where segregation is still considered a cause worth fighting for. When racial tension explodes one summer afternoon, and Rosaleen is arrested and beaten, Lily is compelled to act. Fugitives from justice and from Lily's harsh and unyielding father, they follow a trail left by the woman who died 10 years before.

Finding sanctuary in the home of three beekeeping sisters, Lily starts a journey as much about her understanding of the world, as about the mystery surrounding her mother.

$3.95 -- In the Country We Love -- D Guerrero, et al/ D Guerrero --> 9.2 hrs/ R-4.8 --> memoir

Quote:
In the Country We Love: My Family Divided

Whispersync: Audible ($3.95) | Kindle ($12.99)

Download the accompanying reference guide.

The star of Orange Is the New Black and Jane the Virgin presents her personal story of the real plight of undocumented immigrants in this country.

Diane Guerrero, the television actress from the megahit Orange Is the New Black and Jane the Virgin, was just 14 years old on the day her parents were detained and deported while she was at school. Born in the US, Guerrero was able to remain in the country and continue her education, depending on the kindness of family friends who took her in and helped her build a life and a successful acting career for herself, without the support system of her family.

In the Country We Love is a moving, heartbreaking story of one woman's extraordinary resilience in the face of the nightmarish struggles of undocumented residents in this country. There are over 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the US, many of whom have citizen children, whose lives here are just as precarious, and whose stories haven't been told.

Written with best-selling author Michelle Burford, this memoir is a tale of personal triumph that also casts a much-needed light on the fears that haunt the daily existence of families like the author's and on a system that fails them over and over.

AudioFile isn't a audiobook store, they are an audiobook magazine. If you ever filled out the survey after downloading the Sync audiobooks, you likely got on their mailing list.

Audiobooks Now looks to be a new (or returning) player in the audiobook market. I looked over their website but I couldn't see the details I was looking for. One positive thing I did see: they offer some free "premium" downloads (mostly some short stories from mainstream authors) if you are on their monthly plan. If I get more details I'll update this post.
