Hourly History.

I accidentically discovered Hourly History at Amazon US.

Quote:
At Hourly History, we focus on publishing history books that are concise, straightforward and take no longer than one hour to read
I haven't yet read any of the books, but many look to be very interesting.

They are cheap and many if not most are free.

Have a look

Thanks for setting up the sort, so that we'd see only the freebies. Now if someone just could come up with a sort that would let me know whether or not I've purchased a particular book . . . .

There are times that I would like to have something that I had more confidence in than Wikipedia. I wonder about books like these from Hourly History and those from Charles River Editors. I wonder if they are really thoroughly researched, accurate, etc.

My problem is when I didn't buy from Amazon or the title changed.

But Wikipedia is pretty good (and up to date) on topics no one thinks political (sometimes I add . . . if any exist).

Try Charles River Editors on something you are a semi-expert in ?

CliffsNotes for history? I seriously doubt that a decent historical treatise can be written in only 50 pages. These sound like they were designed to help a student cram for an exam. The one thing I don't like is that they do not list the author on Amazon's page. I never buy a history of anything unless I can check the author's credentials.

ETA: I just downloaded one on Thomas Jefferson. The book itself never lists the actual author, it only says the author is "Hourly History." So absolutely no way to verify who the author is or what her/his credentials are.

This is one of my pet peeves about many self-pub books that I've seen. It's almost is a givesaway that they are self-pubs when they have the title like, The Ulimate Book on Overcoming Depression, and it may only be 35 pages or so long. PULEEEEZE.

Nor do I expect it, but an account of the English Civil Wars can be written so as to be read in an hour and be accurate, reasonably up to date, and allow progress to more detailed works if wanted.

You judge if it does.
