The Applicant by Anthony Steyning

Albert, an international businessman and traveller of a certain vintage, wishes nothing more than to be spared the infirmities and indignities of old age
What if there was another way? A means of turning the tables, of playing destiny at its own game?
Enter the beautiful Javanese sophisticate, Devi, the `Applicant' in Albert's cunning contract with his Maker.
Her task, should she accept it, is to terminate Albert's seventy plus years on planet earth swiftly, professionally and when he least expects it.
A high octane cat and mouse game ensues, pursuer and pursued interlocked in a complex psychological battle of wits and wavering resolve.
As Albert's friend and cerebral sparring partner, Casey begins to piece together the puzzle and is drawn into the fray.

First published by The Book Guild in 2004

Anthony Steyning is the author of four previous novels.

For Americans, it's only 99 cents at Amazon, and probably 89 cents if you price match it at Kobo like I did. Also, since the sequel, Europe at Midnight is $3.99 at Amazon, and $6.99 at Kobo, you could price match it for about $3.59 at Kobo. The third book is $5.38 at Amazon and $6.99 at Kobo, for a price match price of $4.84 at Kobo. Of course, the Kobo refunds are credit at Kobo and not refunds to your credit card.

X-link to the DRM-free thread for some 99 cent specials and a Tolkien tie-in RPG bundle:

The Book View Café author republishing consortium's monthly specials include at the 99 cent mark Gregory Frost's Táin, an historical fantasy based upon the Irish literary classic Táin Bó Cúailnge and which retells the story of the legendary hero Cú Chulainn, originally published by Ace in 1986. And there are two writing advice books from sfnal authors at that price as well, if you're interested, and some other sfnal fiction titles of more recent provenance at various sale price points.

For sfnal tabletop RPG gamers, Bundle of Holding has a new offer up for the gamebooks based on J. R. R. Tolkien's The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, out from Cubicle 7 and Sophisticated Games, who appear to have different licenses for the properties (all the gamebooks are in the same bundle). And last week's Humble Bundle RPG Fiction Faves, which has the officially licensed tie-in gamebooks for The Dresden Files, A Song of Ice and Fire, The Laundry Files, and more, is still available.

I don't know if this is a special offer or a permanent low price.

"On her 26th birthday, Dana and her husband are moving into their apartment when she starts to feel dizzy. She falls to her knees, nauseous. Then the world falls away.

She finds herself at the edge of a green wood by a vast river. A child is screaming. Wading into the water, she pulls him to safety, only to find herself face to face with a very old looking rifle, in the hands of the boy's father. She's terrified. The next thing she knows she's back in her apartment, soaking wet. It's the most terrifying experience of her life ... until it happens again.

The longer Dana spends in 19th century Maryland - a very dangerous place for a black woman - the more aware she is that her life might be over before it's even begun."

Rosemary and Rue by Seanan McGuire first in the October Daye series is currently $1.99 in the US

https://www.amazon.com/Rosemary-Rue-...dp/B002N83HAW/
https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/rosemary-and-rue-6

The world of Faerie never disappeared; it merely went into hiding, continuing to exist parallel to our own. Secrecy is the key to Faerie's survival—but no secret can be kept forever, and when the fae and mortal worlds collide, changelings are born.

Outsiders from birth, these half-human, half-fae children spend their lives fighting for the respect of their immortal relations. Or, in the case of October "Toby" Daye, rejecting it completely. After getting burned by both sides of her heritage, Toby has denied the fae world, retreating into a “normal” life. Unfortunately for her, Faerie has other ideas...

The murder of Countess Evening Winterrose, one of the secret regents of the San Francisco Bay Area, pulls Toby back into the fae world. Unable to resist Evening’s dying curse, Toby must resume her former position as knight errant to the Duke of Shadowed Hills and begin renewing old alliances that may prove her only hope of solving the mystery...before the curse catches up with her.
